Need opinions on painting door handles

Hi All,

I'm thinking of getting my door handles painted to match the car color.

Has anyone here ever done this?

Is it worth doing considering the doors panels have to be removed as well as the handles themselves.

Can it screw up the remote door opener?

Thanx for your help.

if you wanted the door handles painted, then why didn't you just order the c7 package? why does anyone not order that package?it is one of the least expensive options, and adds the most to the car. it was the first option on my list of wants. i think i would have chosen that above the roof or leather.

sdcaclint, I know I know! I'm regretting that decision from the day my car was delivered. But unfortunately there is nothing I can do about it now except add the options piece by piece.

Isn't there a texture on the non-C7 handles? I wouldn't attempt painting a textured plastic surface.

I thought someone posted here that you can buy the handles pre-painted from MB. That would be the way to go.

Sdcaclint, the C7 wasn't available until later in MY2002. Some "early-adopters" had no choice (ease up a bit).

Avlis,

Yes, that was my first idea but the dealer in Montreal wants CAD $850 for the parts and installation. That seemed a bit steep to me.

Would you know what they go for in the US?

This would be the price of the C7 package. I think that renncpe posted awhile back that the door handles cost around $150.

I'm one of those Orion owners without c7 and I think it looks fine with the black handles. Against the blue they really are not that noticeable.

Door handles are about $150 for the pair. Maybe Clairparts can get them for less. Search on "Door handles" someone had a bunch of pairs and was selling them.

Either replace the handles with colored ones, or stick to the black ones. Painted ones will either look crappy right off the bat, or down the line. I wouldn't do it.

Most dealers don't really discuss the C7, so you really can't blame people for not knowing that it's out there. Cut people a little slack.

I have the stock handles and I like them just fine. I like the contrast of the black handles against the Orion blue. However, the painted handles certainly are easier to maintain. For those of you who are sloppy with wax (as I am or was), Simple Green cleans wax off the black handles easily. Read the label first. I put a small amount of Simple Green on a wet paper towel and carefully wiped the handle and the old wax (which had been smeared on for weeks) came right off. I was careful not to get the cleaner on the paint as it would take the wax off that too. A cloth would probably work better than a towel, but I had a paper towel handy and it worked fine.
Deb (who will wax more carefully in future).

Another tip to remove wax from black trim is to get an art gum eraser, I've used Magic Rub by Sanford, you can get it at office max. You will not believe how well this works. Just rub the wax from trim dry and the wax comes right off. This method really gets deep down into any type of low spots that you may not be able to get to using cleaners and cloths.

I seem to recall an earlier post months ago saying the door handles are less than $75 a pair and the installation is really easy.

painted handles

You C7 fans have it all backwards.... you buy a black car to match the door handles ! Besides, why pay double every 15000 miles for z rated tires when the car is limited to 130MPH by MB and 70 MPH by the law ? The stock wheels look just fine in my opinion

because for 700 more you get 17 inch wheels, a short throw shifter, stiffer suspension, and different peddles. all in all its worth the extra $700

Timmy,

Stiffer suspension? Are you sure about this? I know that the coupe has the sport suspension that is extra on the sedan. I'm not sure the C7(Evolution in Canada) is any different suspendion wise.

All coupes have the "sport" suspension. There is no difference between the C7 and non-C7 suspensions.
