Small bits of plastic in oil filter
I changed the oil in my 02 c230k yesterday and found 2 small pieces of black plastic in the oil filter cartridge. I ran the old oil from the pan through a strainer as i was pouring from my catch pan into containers for disposal and there were no pieces in that. Is the plastic from the guides on the timing chain? Or is there somewhere else this could have come from? There is close to 300,000 miles on the car and im unsure if the chain has been replaced before or not.

I didnt get a picture but both pieces were flat, smooth black plastic one was about 1/8 of an inch long and maybe half as wide and the other was a little bit bigger than the first. The edges were not perfectly straight either.

Thats a possibility but they would have had to make it all the way through the engine and back to the filter. I will pull the filter out in the morning and check.

The reason I say this is that the plastic in my (M271 I4) cartridge holder/cap got old and brittle over the years and a few tabs broke off. I ended up having to replace the entire part. Wouldn't be surprised if something like this happens on other engines from the same era such as yours.
