It's the brake booster vacuum pump. I'm guessing it's leaking on your M271 engine. Common problem. See link for problem and solution. Post #83.
Don't bother trying to ghetto fix the problem (3rd party gasket etc.) if you plan on keeping the car. If I knew how many attempts I had to do for the repair I would've simply bought a new pump and gasket the first time around and saved myself a few hours.
