Loose steering after replacing combonation switch

Hi, I own a 2004 c230 Kompressor and have recently replaced the combination switch in the vehicle. Since the repair, the steering wheel has about 2" of play in it not centered. During the repair, when taking off the center bolt, the steering wheel was held down enough to where it got damaged. How should I go about correcting the steering wheel play and center the steering wheel?

Are you talking about the loose metal collar? If the plastic shroud (along with the cruise and turn signal stalks) can rotate, the link has the solution.

Sort of, its not the plastic shroud that covers the combonation switch, it is the actual steering wheel. When the wheels are centered and straight, the steering wheel is turned 45 degrees right and is not as tight as it use to be. When turning it lightly back and forth, it has alot of play and slack to it.

I'm assuming the steering wheel is properly attached to the shaft. Was this 45 degree problem there before you took apart the system? If everything was reinstalled properly, there is no reason for the steering wheel to be in a different position. Did you mark the shaft before removing the steering wheel?

The steering wheel is attached to the shaft by a spline. It is pretty much impossible to damage these teeth, short of using a grinder.

Start following the mechanical parts down into the footwell and through the firewall into the steering rack, while having a buddy jiggle the wheel. There are only so many parts from end to end.

Hopefully it's not the steering rack, or you're looking at an expensive replacement. It's probably something on the steering wheel end though, if this problem suddenly appeared right after the signal stalk replacement.
