Supercharger Rattle
Just joined the site to look for help with a rattle at idle from left side of engine. ‘05 C230 Kompressor, 85,000 miles. First suspicion was a bad bearing. Pulled air box and intake and was surprised and happy to find both front mounting bolts on the supercharger were loose! Talk about an easy fix.
I went ahead and pulled the supercharger to change the oil. Dumped out only 50ml of oil, black and nasty..

While the supercharger is off, check the breather hoses and engine mounts.

Lucky bas-turd. Just pulled my air box, and ran the engine, horrible racket coming from the
supercharger. Removed the belt to be sure...yup.
It's the supercharger. And only 150K miles on it...or less.
You can hear it in the intake and output connections on the plenum. Rackatta-Rackatta-Rackatta!!!
Put your hand over the intake, Woops! Almost sucked my hand in!
But the sound changed so...yup, NOT the alternator for sure.
nice that we have 2 belts to help narrow things down.
Also determinined I need new idler pulley on the other side.
Or water pump? Squeek Squeek Squeek Squeek! Water pump done 50K miles ago,
but not genuine. 250K Miles...fix one things, and another crops up.
Not giving up.

Thanks Slammer, yeah even though they looked ok I went ahead and changed the hoses and check valve. Tensioner pulley sounded a little dry, changed it and idler. Cleaned throttle body. Oil, filter and smog check (Calif.) done just prior.
Only thing I’m waiting on to finish getting it all together are new injector retainers. Couldn’t find any except through the dealer, supposed to be in today.
Hey C230, are you going to do a rebuild yourself, or replace it? I’d enjoy seeing pictures and progress.
This car was my wife’s car. Don’t think she ever drove it over 65mph. I did. Didn’t have to commute to work very far, hence the low miles.
Sweet little car, love it.
Do you guys have any tips for using the Search feature? I don’t have too much luck with it.
Thanks guys, Robert

Nah, I don't have the tools to do that kind of work. And with the racket it's making, likely the rotors are grinding against each other.
What I've learned is that when the bearings go bad it creates some slack and the rotors operate in a very tight
tolerance. So if you see a used one and the rotors are scratched up..skip it. Once that kind of damage occurs...not easy to fix.
I'll be getting a used one.
