i want to find out just what is the ugly looking antenna is for on my C32. can anyone tell?

is the antenna for the nav? but i don't have nav. is it for the phone? but i also don't have the V60 phone.

It's the GPS antenna for Tele-Aid.

It may be for Tele-aid but I'm not convinced it does anything. I knocked mine off accidently and was quite surprised at what I saw. No physical connection to anything. It's just glued to the window. Nothing inside the thing except a piece of foil with adhesive on it and a wire connecting the foil to the female receptacle that the little mast screws into. No components/coils/resistors/capacitors etc. Funny story....when I went to order the replacement the parts guy apologized that something was wrong with the computer or maybe because the car was so new to the market but the price for the part....$32...had to be wrong. "Nothing we sell is that cheap". Turns out it was $32. I bet you could take it off and still have the GPS functional.

Before handheld cellphones were so cheap and plentiful, half the cars on the road had antennas mounted on the windows of their vehicles that had no "wired" physical connection. The antenna's signal somehow goes through the glass to another piece stuck to the inside of the glass. I assume this is how the GPS antenna works.

GPS antenna are a small square flat metal plate ... that must be able to "see" the sky ..

Remember radio waves travel thru sky/glass/walls etc - so the outside bit relays the signal to the inside bit

Cheers

See Garage
I have also been told that several antennas work together, both to provide primary services, and to serve as redundant back-up, in case the primary antenna is inoperative due to accident, etc.

So, the knobby antenna on the rear window may not appear to have a primary purpose, but may be a necessary back-up.

Salesman told me this, so not sure how accurate it is.

I don't have Tele-aid, but I do have both COMAND (with the nav syatem) and the integrated phone. I don't have an antenna at all, and I still don't get how the phone/GPS works.
