So FrankW could "drive it like he stole it"
At the time the 112 was developed they were determined it enjoy LEV (low emission vehicle) status in Europe. Hence the twinspark. Kraut engineering for the sake of engineering if you ask me sometimes.
Their auto trannys are a masterpiece in simplicity - especially the 7G for what it achieves I think cost is driving simplicity in the new DB regime & that is good.

Lenin mentioned that his issue with his mis-fire on #6 was similar and turned out that he had problem with his cam which the factory cam is pressed together and over time it got loose? and threw off the timing.
could this be true? since there is indeed a pulse from the exhaust that sounds like the cam is off and someone did comment that it soulds like you have aftermarket cam on there.
now I'm wondering IF intake valve or exhaust valve not closing or opening properly can cause/create the pulse in the exhaust note.

Benz have made hollow camshafts for other engines but not the 112 to my knowledge - Yours is an AMG so maybe AMG messed with the cams but my records show that the C32 also has one piece cast cams.
Is he maybe not saying that the cam chain pulley came loose?

update:
so compression test and leak down test was done and confirmed that something was f-ed on #4. parts replaced on #4 including all three valves (even tho current one's checked out with no bent), valve springs, and rocker arms. cam was taken out and measured to be within the correct spec. one of the valve did hit the piston making a small dent. reinstalled everything and compression is back to normal. we believe the lost of compression might have been caused by the hydraulic lifter on the rocker arm since the springs taken out seems ok. parts are cheap enough, so replaced'em anyway.
however right now it is still misfiring on #4. the shop is doing more test. the last thing we haven't check is the injector.
not gonna discuss the bill. too painful. lol
attached some pics.
edit: and glyn is correct. the cam is indeed one piece. don't know why other guys said different.

Bore looks beautiful - Good old alusil - man it's tough. This darn thing is being stubborn - lifter might have been the problem
Pleased compression is back - good news
Let us know how injector testing goes. So much wrong all on one cylinder. Are they happy with wires & coils??? on No 4?

new camshaft arrived and replaced. the exhaust lobe on the old shaft is wayyyy off. I don't know how this could happen if this is indeed a one piece camshaft, but anyway you can see how much the exhaust timing is off in the pic below. new one on the right and old one on the left. I wonder if you could repair the old cam tho. hmm...
picking up the car later today.

picked up the car total bill $2704 ish
took a better look at the camshaft. the 32 camshaft is pressed together. my guess is the rocker seized while the camshaft continues to push against it and eventually moved the lobe soo far out of place.
ooh..and WTF!!!!!! my up-down motor linkage for the steering column died on the spot when I got into the car. now it's stuck at the highest position.

Glad ya got it resolved! Not so glad about the bill hurts just to see that kinda number on a bill. A bill like that would be a huge percentage of the value of my car :x

Hey Frank - bad news - You are not having much luck. Interesting - so the AMG cam is pressed together. I learned something. I'm sure that could be fixed. Trouble is it might need to return to Germany for that.

even if the cam is fixable (looks like it is) it would probably require a new center shaft which means all lobe needs to come off. if somehow we can force the lobe back to position without a new shaft it means that the lobe is loose enough it might need a new shaft anyway. either way it's a lose lose situation. lol pretty garbage design just to built custom timing for the AMG cars IMO.
i will try and send AMG an email and see what happens.

As long as your car gets back to being a beast, it'll all be worth it in the long run. Right now, it may be hurtful to the wallet, but you won't regret it later when it's running strong!

they also have a regular 320 camshaft on hand and that one is one piece cast. didn't weight them, but just by holding both the AMG camshaft is slightly lighter.
