Parking brake

I used to have a 1987 190e that had a hand brake. I of course, like most never used it, and then one service I took it in for said I had to replace the parking brake (at the time around $400) b/c it was in a bad state from not being used at all. I have recently gotten a 2004 C320 (now with foot parking brake) and was wondering, has anyone ever had this problem of parking brake disuse resulting in costly service replacement? I sometimes just put the parking brake on (maybe 1x/2wks) just for preventing this.

Why not just set the parking brake when parking the vehicle?

some cars rear brakes are adjusted by setting the parking brake. I use the parking brake every time I park the car.

I drive a stick and rarely use the e-brake. Only use it on steep inclines. If the car doesn't roll when I engage the clutch, I don't see the use. Plus, it's foot operated...much prefer a hand operated unit.

mm..agreed..I believe it will be sort of difficult to use the foot-operated parkbrake when start at the slope. However, my little mazda is stick and I never use handbrake when start at slope, it's not that difficult to "catch" the point that when you release clutch and step on gas pedal at the same time and the car will not move forward nor slip backward..

hope I am expressing myself correct....:P

No, it is not - to disengage it you use a hand, not a foot.

so what were they thinking when they put a foot brake in the car? I mean, sure, the center of the car looks really clean, but handbrakes are hardly obtrusive... my S10 had a foot brake, it feels foreign to me to have that in a car

I can tell you my 60's Chevelles had to have there parking brake cables replaced due to corrossion. I suspect and e-brake cable can have problems. The foot brake works just fine, even when taking off on a steep hill. You just use your other hand to release it.

Yeah, I was a bit naive, and shelled out the $$$ for the fix. Afterwards I just periodically used it to keep it working.
