Key Question

When you take delivery of the car do you get any keys other than the smart keys? How many keys do you get? Is there a valet key at all?

I got two smart keys. There's no other kind of key.

Inside the smart key is embedded a physical valet key, but for '05, it only locks the glove, not the trunk.

So you get a valet key with each of the smart keys. Iam asking because I park in a garage where you leave your keys with the person you share the parking spot with and I did not want to give them a smart key. Would they have problems only having the valet key?

the valet key is inside the smartkey.

i don't think the valet key can start the car.

No, it is the other way around: the smart key becomes a valet key when you remove that metal key - so that valet can not open the glove box - they still should be able to start the engine, how can you do it with a metal key?

You can also have the thin wallet key....

if you manually lock the trunk with the metal key then the smart key won't open/unlock it...

This can't be done with the '05 models as stated. You can not lock the trunk.

Yes, you can - by pressing the "lock" button.

If you're referring to securing the trunk from a parking attendant with the SmartKey, you can't "hard" lock the trunk with the mechanical key on a 2005 or later. This was feature was removed.

You can unlock the trunk, door, or glove box... but only "hard" lock the glove box.

if you take out the metal key, then you leave them a key with no hoop, and my luck they would loose it since there is nothing to hang it on!

Yep, this is an obvious design doo-doo. There could be a dummy metal piece that would go in instead of the metal key.

I never have and never will let a valet touch my car, period. It is the service department personnel that I worry about

I used to be a valet parker (or Personal Vehicle Location Manager as I prefer!), never have I seen anyone nor heard of someone going through the trunk, usually dont have enought time for something like that, or care enough. These are mostly kids parking and are just looking for a few extra bucks lying around the inside, they work for tips, and dont get paid otherwise (not saying its right, and the only thing I stole was 3 glasses from the restraunt, they froze in my cup holders and couldnt get em out!!!). And as far as not having an eye to hang a key on, its a huge pain in the ***, cause you also have nothing to attach the ticket to to find the key! And most of the time, if the car is on a private lot thats in view, the doors usually dont get locked anyway! ugh so glad I dont do that anymore!... And if you do valet park, be kind give the kid at least a $2 tip, its not as easy as it looks sometimes, and dont give change, thats just plain insulting! Remember, these kids work for tips!

Only used the valet service twice (Hotel Christmas Party in Downtown S.D. and some fancy restaurant joint in La Jolla). But I always wondered, what happens if more than two Mercedes show up, how do you tell the keys apart ?

I'd like to see valet service at an event where everyone drives a Mercedes-Benz. What a cluster-f#^K.
