Location of the Light Sensor?

Where is the sensor that triggers the automatic headlights? I've been looking for where it is b/c there are really weird times/situations in which the headlights turn on/off and I was just trying to make sense of it. Particularly at dawn/dusk. Thanks!

on the windshield, if you look in the upper middle part, you'll see sensors.

I thought it was that black thing on the hood? I also notice my headlights illuminate when the wipers are activated via the rain sensor. I notice the MB sensor is different from the one I had on my 3.5RL. It seems to "look ahead" if that makes sense. It won't illuminate under a bridge where my RL would. I find this feature neat. The RL would always turn on/off especially when going under all the freeway overpasses in traffic. The MB one won't turn on unless everywhere is dark and it even activates much quicker in tunnels... like it fore-see's the darkness ahead. Hope that makes sense. lol

I think Phillip was right. I covered the center sensor on the bottom row and my lights came on. What is the sensor on the hood?

That's for the auto-dimming mirrors.

Why would you block out the automatic lights function when you can just turn it off and use it manually?

On pre-2004 W/CL203 there were 3 light sensors: rain sensor (top of the windshield), then road-ahead light sensor (front side of the rear view mirror, faces forward) and ambient light sensor (imbedded in the mirror, faces rearwards). This has since been simplified by MB, and all news models have a combined rain and light sensor mounted at the top of the windshield.

I have the 2005 and the "road-ahead" sensor (front side of the rear view mirror) is still there. Unless this senses something else in the 2005...

There is an orange coloured LED below the rear view mirror... Anyone knows what this is for?

Also, anyone knows how the rain sensors work (What do they sense? Moisture?)? It can't be because its behind the windscreen... Its also "intelligent" enough to know when the rain is heavy or light...

The led on the mirror is for the garage door opener, you know it's in program mode if it's flashing... etc..

The sensors actually sense water droplets and NOT moisture. There is a mirror with lens that is used and I believe it senses the difference is refraction of light. When water passes over it, light refracts differently. The LED that is Always ON is the new ambient light that illuminates the center console area. The led for the garage door opener is different. THe Ambient Light is a 2005 added feature. Do a search. Mirrors run around 700 bucks new before anyone asks if it can be retroftted.

Does anyone know if you can adjust the sensitivity for the auto light function? I leave my lights on the auto function always. In the morning, even if it is bright out, it seems to turn on the headlights. It turns on appropriately when I drive home in the evening, but I think it's a bit sensitive for the morning (dawn light).

I don't think its more sensitive in the mornings, rather, it takes a longer time to go off which you won't notice in the evenings. This is so for a good reason - you wouldn't want the headlights from an on-coming vehicle turning off your headlights while your car is moving...

I found out (through experimenting with the rear view mirror's sensors) that the "road-ahead" light sensor actually doesn't switch on the headlights. Instead, it works together with the sensor on the mirror to auto-dim the rear view mirror.

If the light level at the front of the car (try covering the sensor with a card) is lower than the rear of the car, the mirror dims.
