05 "design flaw"

Sorry if this has been talked about already but I recently had my 2005 c240 with 8000 miles on it serviced for a transmission fluid leak. Upon talking with a few people in the service waiting room it appeared I was not the only owner who had this problem. After repairs were made my advisor stated that some 2004 and all 2005 C class models have a "transmission design flaw with the electrical seal rings". He also said MB decided not to notify owners and repairs are being done on an "as needed" basis. At first I thought it was just an excuse but after talking with several other c lass owners it seams I wasnt the only one.

Just a heads up....

How did you notice the leak? Did you feel anything? See anything? Symptoms? Thanks!

I have an automatic transmission and noticed last week that after I turned the vehicle off a small puddle of transmission fluid would appear on the ground. Never had any warning lights come on or any problems driving the car. When I dropped the car off, the first thing my advisor said was that its most likely the seal rings and that most 2005 c class models are now coming in for the repair. He later called and said that they put in the "new Kit MB sent out" and that the problem should not occur anymore. He did not elaborate too much but just said it was a design flaw for the c class 05's. I then asked about the 04's and he said that some models were affected. First thought it was BS, but after talking to people in the waiting room, I was not the only one affected.

Yes. Your dealer saw your post and made sure you got a defective transmission seal.
Revstriker confirmed this.

Hey, I took my car in for that initial free check-up service, and my Service Advisor told me about this. My car was NOT leaking or anything, but they said they were going to replace the transmission valve seals because 2004.5 and 2005 C-Class models had a small problem, and before anything happened they would replace it under warranty. So they did. I don't know if they did find something when they were checking my car, but the SA made it sound like it was more of a preventive maintenance thing. I'm glad I read this, cause I'm going to go buy my SA lunch !

This is pretty common in all automotive and transportation sectors. Its called an unofficial campaign. It usually starts out as a TSB. After the tech sees it enough times, he replaces any that come in, even if they are fine. In a way, it is preventative- he or she- or even MB corporate tech service, has seen enough problems with them to deem them replace should the opportunity arise. A couple of years ago they likely would have waited until you had a problem(like those of 02 owners with noisy sway bar bushings), but now the bad press about quality problems has made them a little more pro-active.

I have a feeling you can add my '05 with 5K miles on it to this list. Been noticing it on the floor of the garage. Wiped it up, and saw red, literally, lol. So its off to the dealer I go.

Yep had the same problem w/ my C55. It was at the dealer getting some work done, and they called to let me know the tranny was leaking on the electrical seal etc etc...

All done now, hope it holds up
