Help re: cracked steering wheel buttons

When I had my c230k my steering wheels buttons cracked twice... I was wondering if it only happens to Coupe owners or if you guys with sedans had the same problem?

The reason why I'm asking is cuz I'm looking for used , steering wheel sbuttons for my car, it came with the classic trim, so a black steering wheel that I had replaced with the Java one, now all I need are 2 java consoles but they sell around 200 each side new

If any of you guys with sedans had problems wth cracked steering buttons let me know so I can start loking at different dealership for used ones.. thanks

Had mine replaced twice under warranty. Poor design - they must have never tested it in Finland (that's as close to the Noth Pole as MB can get; if they had, it certainly wouldn't have cracked here in Virginia) But they learned - got rid of it in MY 2005.

are they cracking because of the COLD ?

You all have 2001 and 2002 models. I have a 2003 but live in warm California.
Should I be concerned about cracking steering wheel buttons ?

Yes, mine cracked in winter within first two minutes of getting into the car. Don't remember the exact ambient temperatures, but there was snow on the ground and the rubber button covers certainly were stiff and fragile. I don't think you are in any danger in CA, but - as a measure of precaution - do not operate the buttons at least until after you start feeling warm air blown from the vents.

When you say "cracked", do you mean the rubber is phyisically torn? Mine look like they're cracked (ie the light isn't even, looks like the stuff they used to draw the icons cracked), but the buttons are physically intact still.

Yeah, seems like the paint or whatever it is cracked, so you can see the light through the crack at night if you press on the buttons, people shouldn't relly be worried about this, you don't notice it... have it changed if your car is under warranty only I guess.....

So far it seems to have only afected coupe owners.. no sedan owners here?

gotta agree with you there Carlos, i too have never had a problem with my steering wheel controls cracking. mine are almost two years old, and still fine. they will honk the horn once in a while if i press to hard.

also i dont see how coupe owners would get a cheaper set of steering wheel controls over sedan owners. i guess that would mean the sport sedan owners getting the same cheap quality set. aside from their shape, they look pretty much the same to me, the 02-04 coupe controls and 01-up sedan controls.
