Question CD-Changer specs

Does anyone know if the CD-changer from the dealer is the same one they've been selling since '99 and if not, can it play CDs with mp3's on it?

I'm asking this b/c I was told the changer costs $995 from the dealer (as opposed to $700 something as stated on www.mbusa.com) due to the "new" optical system. Their changer is somehow better, though I'm not sure of that. If it doesn't support mp3 playback, then does anyone know when it will?

They started using the D2B fiber optic system in 1999. The Alpine changer is the same one, p/n 203 820 9089. It does not play MP3's.

The CD Changer for other models is different than the one for the W203. It's smaller and fits in the glove box. While the older DB2 fiber optic CD changers would work, they don't fit. The correct CD Changer is available for $399 from AutoClass.net, ask for Gaston. You will have to buy the bracket and fiber cable. If you want to save a few bucks, avoid the bracket and duct tape it in place (lol). No sales tax if you live outside Florida.

Or you can avoid the whole ugly mess and get the MB Audio 10 AM/FM/CD to replace the cassette radio you have. It's made by Becker and sounds better than the factory Alpine unit. It's available new at most MB dealers outside the North America or on Ebay.de for a used one or AutoClass.net can get you that but they are pricey.

Cool

Haha, sorry about that I didn't realize that this name might be popular...maybe I should have gone with C230something. Oh well, I don't post much so it shouldn't be a problem.

Anyway, I was told (by the dealer) that not buying the dealer's cd player and installing aftermarket would void the warranty on my speaker (bose) system and radio. That's why i'm reluctant to buy the radio cheaper and now i'm thinking about getting ripped off by the dealer just so I can listen to cds.

Then again, many of the new players support mp3's so maybe i'll just wait 4 years or 50000 miles before I get a cd changer.

I bought the Becker made Mercedes-Benz fiber optic connected 6 disc CD changer from www.autotoys.com for $450/shipped. I got the cable from my dealer for $20. Installation was very easy. I only needed two tools - #20 TORX bit screwdriver and a small flatblade screwdriver. I installed mine in my 2002 C240 in less than 1 hour, but I suspect your procedure would be the same. The fit is so tight from top to bottom, I took someone elses advice and used velcro to hold it in place. Works perfectly! I didn't unplug my battery during the process and so far have not had to have the dealer re-program the radio to accept the changer - it just works! Why would you void a warranty by using the exact same OEM changer? Sounds like he is trying to scare you into buying from them. Even if you took it in for service on the radio at a later date, who would know that you didn't have it installed by the dealer? Surely they don't memorize everyone's vehicles!

i was just joking i dont care post as much as you'd like. and also if u get the the Mercedes cd changer somewhere else and have someone else install it the dealer would never know so its fine it wont voild anything.
i am not sure where u live but is there a Sound Advice in your area they carry the mercedes factory cd changer and they install it and it definitly wont void your warrenty. and by the way i play burned cd's on my changer and it works fine. if thats what u mean bu Mp3's or u probally mean a mp3 player which it is not. but i mainly listen to all burned cds and its fine it sounds great.

I may have misunderstood the question about mp3's. I was thinking of an aux input for an mp3 player. The MB Alpine changer will play most CD-R's but not CD-RW's.
