Transmission plug

Firstly in older discussions about the transmission plug on the 722.6 automatic a number of comments were about stripping the plug, but I not sure wether they are suggesting that the drive socket, be it a hex or T30 shaped hole, is what is being stripped, preventing the plug from being turned or it is the plug thread that get stripped , if this happens wouldn't the thread on the sump get damaged also and secondly is there anything special about the plug's crushable copper sealing ring or can you use any crushable sealing ring that has the same dimensions
