radio malfunction
About 3 weeks ago the radio on my 2002 C230 coupe stopped working. It stopped producing any sound although I can switch stations and do everything else. Long story short: the radio is being warranty swapped by the dealer. They fixed it temporarly, which lasted 2 days, but now all I have is silence.
The problem is that as of yesterday, the radio is on backorder. Actually there are 100 on back order. It might be some time before I get to listen to Christmas tunes in the car, if at all this season.
I was thinking of asking the dealer if I could pay the upgrade price and get the command system instead. Is this a good idea or am I pissing away my money? I have the BOSE audio system.
I’m also in the market for a CD changer. I was thinking of getting one of them from EBAY and having the dealer install it. Will I save money on the install if I have it installed when the dealer has the dash apart replacing the radio under warrenty? Will they let me combine the services?

I just had my stock radio replaced with COMAND and I do not regret it at all. COMAND is far superior to the factory tape deck, and you gain so much functionality. I don't think that you will find a dealer that will allow or perform an upgrade to COMAND from the standard tape deck, as myself and many others have inquired and have been told that it cannot be done. I may be wrong, but I never had any luck. Contact MBenzNL, as he offers COMAND and a self install kit way cheper than a delaler, and you could just do the upgrade yourself.
The changer can be purchased from eBay, but whether the dealer would install it for you being that you purchased somewhere else is the big question. Some dealers can be sticky on various requests, but all you can do is ask.

have the same problem
On an '02 coupe but its intermittant. dealer replaced the head unit but it didn't fix it. than replace the amp (bose, rear passenager side). Still have the same problem. Have to bring it in again.

The good news is that if I do nothing else, once the standard cassette radio comes off backorder the dealership will swap the faulty one for a new one under warranty.
Does anyone know the price difference of the command over the cassette radio? I'd like to know this before calling the dealer to inquire about upgrading.
I've read that sound quailty is improved on the command unit as opposed to the tape radio. How much better is it?
who is MBenzNL? I'm rather new here and have seen the name only a few times. How much for the command system and self install kit? How easy is it to swap the radio for command?

Unless you really use the cassette player, get the Audio 10 radio/CD player. It is only about $300 (grey market) and gives easy access to your CD without going through a CD changer. It does sound better than the stock radio. I'm not sure if your dealer can get one though.
