RPM's question....

Happy Holidays everyone,

I bought my 05 c230 SS 2 weeks ago, and since I work so close to home, I havent had a chance to drive it over 50-60mph that often. Over the weekend, I took it on a 100 mile trip and thought it rode great at higher speeds.

One question I have is....What are your RPM's at around 60-80 MPH? I believe I was in the 30-35 range, and this is with the Automatic in "comfort" mode.

Just curious to see if this is consitant with what you are getting.

Thanks in advance.

for comparison, at 60 mph, a c320 would turn 2000 RPM.

I have a 6speed manual 2k5 C230 SS,

60MPH in 6th gear = 2500 RPM range
70MPH in 6th gear = 2900-3000 RPM range
80MPH in 6th gear = 3200 RPM range
90MPH in 6th gear = 3500 RPM range
100MPH in 6th gear = 3800 RPM range

etc...Hope this helps~

Had: 1987 300TD, Had: 2004 C230 Sport Sedan, Have: 2014 E350 Sport, Have: 2019 S450
With the auto, 80mph = about 3100rpm

(Best mpg seems to be 70-75mph . . . don't know why)

Is there any difference in gas milage using either "sport" or "comfort" modes?

yes there is. in my car i have standard and winter mode which is the same as your sport and comfort modes respectively. in sport mode you start in first gear and in comfort mode the car starts off in second gear. i believe that only if you drive mostly city miles then in sport you waste more gas than in comfort mode, since you go through an extra gear. but if your doing mostly highway it doesnt really make a difference. That's my logic, i may be wrong but i dont think i'm to far off.

the sport to comfort mode shouldnt matter because your gear ratios havent changed.

I guess (based on other cars with auto I used to have) that in addition to starting in 2nd gear (which is really a "winter more" - not all cars do that in economy mode), the sport mode usually has shift points at higher RPM. This results in a quicker pick-up, but penalizes you on gas consumption, and vice versa. Then again, it all comes down to how heavy your right foot is. If you are a "granny"-type driver, I would think there would be no difference in gas mileage, regardless of the mode set.
