Question about door air bags...

on a 2002 C230 coupe. I have the cloth interior and would like to redo it in leather. I own and operate and automotive interior business, so the upholstery work will not be a problem (www.kristkustoms.com if you care to look). My question is how the side airbags (doors and rear quarter panels) work. Is the actual cloth part of the panel just a cover, and does it swing or fall out of the way incase the air bag deploys? Or does the stitch down the cloth actually split open to allow the air bag to deploy? If the stitch has to split open, I will obviously have to use a very thin thread to allow an easy "rip" incase of air bag deployment. Any help is definitely appreciated.

I believe the stitch opens.
