my stereo install
these are the pics from my stereo install. It consists of the following:
Alpine cda-7995 head unit with alpine xm tuner
Jl 300/4 amp running jl xr-650 components in stock front locations and jl xr 650 mid-woofers in rear stock location.
Jl 500/1 mono bass amp powering a Jl 10w-7. The box was built for sound quality as well as functionality. It still allows for access to the spare tire and is a three chamber design. SPL with this sub is in the low 140s. It is as loud as most 3 12" systems.
I will add to this system in the next few months. I plan to have dvd, ps2 and screens in the sunvisors. I am seriously thinking to lose the spare tire and do a full custom trunk with all of the goodies. Sorry for the blurry pics.

thanks for finally posting pics man! that looks damn nice. where'd you get your install mount kit for the alpine HU? that looks really professional. i'm diggin the sub box and amp mounts too; how much trunk space do you have left? and yea, do you still have steering wheel controls?

No way he still has steering wheel controls. That's to be expected though.
Damn that's a clean head unit install though. How did they do it? Did they get a kit? Or did they custom manufacture an adapter?

he may not have steering wheel controls, but there was someone that did install an aftermarket deck, and retained the volume control on the steering wheel.
what dash install kit are you using? please list a part number, manufacture, and if possible a location to purchase. i am really torn between having an interface for the factory head unit (audio 10 preferrably), or using my pioneer 825. i like the factory look, but the sound blows

the steering wheel controls do not work. Alpine does make something for older benzs, but not for ours yet. Its alright since i sit back with my remote. The dash kit is made by metra. I will find out where to order one. Trunk space is still good for me. It was dark out when i took the pic, i will take another when it is light out and from a better angle. The guys who did my install were suburban auto radio in oaklyn,nj. They are very good with top-dollar cars and have done many celebrity cars.

Yes, please tell us where to get the dash kit and what the Metra part number is. I used Metra's parts search thing, but could not find any dash kit for the W203 C-Class cars. Perhaps the kit is made for another car but happens to work in the C-class dash?

QC1, can you tell us how to remove the speaker grille's (tweeter & woofer)? Also, do the tweeter/woofer component speakers in the front door have passive xover's like aftermarket sets?
thanks
Jim

Im going to start my system in the next couple days so as for removing the grilles, Im not sure how they come out yet. As for the X-Over, someone told me they have a passive X-over installed, but Im not 100%, either way Im replacing the front set with a set of Kicker I6.2 Components.

Jim,
The front speakers (tweeter and midrange) most likely have a passive crossover. However, those crossovers are tuned for those speakers. So you would not use them with aftermarket component speakers. Instead, you would use the crossovers that come with your new set of speakers.
Never use crossovers designed for one system in another system. It won't sound right. The crossover point between the tweeter and midrange and the relative levels of the drivers will be wrong. There could also be overlap between the ranges covered by the drivers if they do not match the crossover.
Crossover design is something that is very specific to the frequency response curves and impedences of the drivers you are using.

When a true active system is used, whereby each drive unit receives its own banwidth limited power amplified signal, this can facilitate shaping the sound in a much braoder range of applications/situations to either text book flat response or your own personal tastes(less intrusively than when using a grapic E.Q....even one of parametric design.)
However splitting the source signal at or after ther point of pre-amplification,then being passed from active x-overs on to seperate power amp stages (one per drive unit) often proves more expensive than many people are happy about.
Actively amplified loudpseaker systems are in many qualified peoples experience (recording studio sound engineers, audiophile loudspeaker manufacturers)the best way around the inherent weaknesses of passive x-over design.
With all of that said,I will be very interested to hear the forth coming car audio system made for Aston Martin by Linn products of scotland,it should adhere to all of the above principles.....................in theory!!!!

Alpine CVA-1005 (TV)
McIntosh MC444 (4 x 110w) Amp
JL XR-653CS (3-way component set)
(aforementioned parts are from my old car).
I have also decided to get the JL 500/1 amp but am deciding between using 2 x 10w3's or 1 x 10w7 like you're using.
If you could, could you elaborate more on how the single 10w7 sounds? Thanks!

Before I start installing mine I wanted to ask those of you who have replaced the stock HU, when you start the car does the computer in the dash go right to the malfunction page saying the the radio is missing?
KJ-TypeR, thats a nice setup, should be sweet sounding. This is what I got so far
Rockford Fosgate HU RFX9200
SCSI Neo HU Mp3 Player 40 gig
Kicker Component I6.2
Kicker Amp 1302
Kicker Amp 704
Kicker 2 15" Subs Comp Vr
Kicker X-Over 3.1
RF Capacitor
I still need to get a set of speakers for the rear, most likely Kicker again. Im really excited about the Neo Mp3 HU the most though.

Man I hope so, the guy at the install place was saying its to much for a small car. He had me kinda worried. Also I guess I can kiss my trunk space good-bye. Oh well, KJ-TypeR, have you replaced your rear set speakers at all? Im wondering if I should do it now or wait.

How much was the double din case? Metras webpage is kinda weird, why dont they have a number? Also, since its not listed in the product section by car or by number how do you order it? Weird.
