They don't light up unless the lights go on (in Auto mode). That's when the whole panel lights up. Alternatively, if you turn the lights on (last or second to last switch position) then the panel would also lightup.
In neutral position, you might notice the handle is lit (like the first of the three pictures). At least that's my 05. I didn't notice it at first.

You guys should test this AT NIGHT, when the outside light sensor on the hood determines that it is DARK, and therefore brightens the dashboard lighting and this switch to its max. Naturally, this backlighting will be dim or off during daylight if you use Auto Mode.

going off of that picture #2, my car doesn't do that, no matter what pos'n the switch is in. the mirror controls are lit, the light switch itself is lit, but the pos'n indications are not. similarly, my seat memory 'M' button is lit, but the '1,2,3' are not. so I just chucked that up to the previous 'that's retarded' conclusion. Guess I'll call my svc advisor about this now
I'm curious as to what temp. they turn themselves on at... my opinion is that hawaii doesn't get 'cold' enough for them to kick in, since they've never worked. which is why user controls over the heat would be nice ^_^

The ones on the W203 worked quite well.
We also never had a problem with the heated side mirror on my family's previous cars, did you get them checked and make sure it's in working order?? Maybe the part that makes the heat (don't know what it's called) is blown or something.

'03 C240 and mine light up. But it seems that it is only when it is dark. I'm not sure if it's because you can only see them lit up when it is dark enough or if they are lit up all the time and it is just too bright to see them in the daytime. Fog light indicators are visible at all times when fog lights are on.

Good luck speaking to your service advisor on getting the switch and maybe the heated mirror working.

Thanks for everyone who contributed in answering my question and giving me advise. For those who doesn't have the light, please keep us posted if there is any update. As I have said before, I'm new to the forum and I really appreciated for the help that I get here. (Which is far superior than the help and "information" that I get from the dealership.) Thanks again.

The only situation where I found this logic fails is where there still is water condensation (e.g. after a rain) on the mirrors, but the dew point is low (e.g. in the morning on a warm sunny day, when the temperature is rapidly rising). In cases like this I would want to be able to override the automatics. A simple solution would be to make the mirror heaters work in sync with the rear defroster (as done in many other cars).

sorry, I had been slackin'... so, I pick up my car tomorrow from service, and the headlight switch *was* defective. apparently, so is the switch on the '05 240 loaner I've been driving, as it doesn't light up either.
the bad: no switch ***'ys in stock, so it's on order, which means I get to take the car back into svc later on but at least they acknowledged that there was something wrong.
and I forgot to ask about the stinkin' mirror!

Please keep us updated because there are a few of us here (including myself) have the icon not light up on the switch. It seems that this only happened on the 05 model

Fellas, I would print out this thread and take it with you to the dealer as proof, if needed... Since the design of the switch is identical from 2001 to 2005, why would MB bother (with the expense) to change anything for 2005 only. Do some testing at night to ensure all the icons light up. If they don't, you have a bulb that's burned out, and your dealer should fix it. A copy of this thread is your backup if they balk.
We know more about these cars than the average service tech, sorry to say.

Everything finally lights up. Funny thing is that I purchased the car without everything light up. Oh yea, it's a 05 C230SS

On mine the knob icons are not lit, the way it has always been since day 1. I couldn't care less, though, as it always is at "0" with DRL on.

mine lights up. Wiedermann asked me like 6 months ago the same question, whether icons lit up or not. i dont remember if the first light switch i had did or not, but when i installed the new one for the folding mirrors, it does.
