Thanks. Luckily she walked away without a scratch...the car held up well.

Scary thing is, a C55 has nearly the same predicted depreciation. Ouch! I'd rather take a bath on a cheap car than an expensive one

Really? That might be something to look into when people try and sell their C55...its a sweet ride. I am going to get a new car in 2 years and 4 months...until then I am stuck with my coupe and looking for a cheap awd or 4wd.

It's all relative. Since most cars depreciate at a similarly predictable rate on average, you almost always incure a higher monetary loss in regards to depreciation with more expensive cars. If you plan on keeping the car, none of that really matters though. VERY RARELY is a "new" car a good investment!

I went thru the same dilema when I bought my coupe. There was all kinds of cool used cars, but my wife poo-poo'd any car that didn't have lots of air bags and super safety ratings. This time around, the bevy of used rides I'd be interested in would have no trouble passing the wife test Cars I'll be following in the used market now are the new SLK, the Saturn SKY(have you seen this thing yet? Holy cow, can't believe its a Saturn!), G35 Coupe, Audi TT 3.2, and I'll still keep on the SL500, can't believe it will become afordable soon, but I'll keep my fingers crossed!

I could have bought anything really, but with a baby on the way, she seemed to make sense

For the same price as your Coupe was new, you'll be able to buy a C55!

Depends on what you consider affordable...my hesitation with an SL out of warranty is the repairs...

For that price, just go with a X-type Jaguar. They are all wheel drive standard and if you get a year or two old one, its much cheaper then a benz. Since Jaguar is a Ford product, the re-sale value sucks.

I would expect that after 4 years most of the bugs are out of the car. Aside from the cracking steering wheel buttons, I haven't any issues that weren't bugs or glitches...so mechanically I expect the car would be solid. That folding metal roof however, makes me a little worried.

Ive been shopping 190 SL's from the late sixties lately. Love the shape of the 300SL, can't stomach the price. The 190 is mostly the same thing, save the fender vents. Completely impractical car, especially here in Wisconsin

Funny you should mention that, the Jaguar dealer finally called me back. He has 32 2002 X-Types in stock. All with 6yr/100,000 on them.

The 2 that interested me are:

2.5l 38K 02 Blue/Tan, Auto, Loaded Sans Navi = $18.500
3.0l 40K 02 Forgot to Ask, Stick, Loaded + Navi = $20,000

MB offered me $13K for the trade-in, Volvo offered $16.5K...if Jag is in between I might go for it. I want a stick but Jaguar's stick suck...but its a bigger engine + Navi.

They are giving me a trade-in quote tomorrow...I should know more then.

i'd stay away from the 02's. my dad had the 02' X-type sport and had major problems with it. even though you'll have a warranty, do u really wanna go through the hassle of constantly going to the dealership and driving cheap loaner cars all the time? i heard they corrected alot of the problems for 03' so i'd say consider that. i looked into the 05' X-type sport 3.0 prior to ordering my C230 SS. there was just something about the X-type that turned me off though. not feeling the interior too much and the dash feels like it's underpar compared to much of it's competition. i got a sweet deal on the lease numbers also but just had to turn it down.

The 2.5 is a real wuss, go for the 3.0 if youve got the dough. Why not buy a used Jeep? I grew up with Jeeps, and have owned 3- all have been very reliable(except the brake rotors on the 00). A lot cheaper than the X-Type. Do you really need two cars? Having a truck is nice to haul **** around, and since youve still got the car....

Yeah I have (in NJ now) an S-Type with a ton of problems, I am used to it. The loaners are X-Types, so it's no big deal either way. I would sell the car in 2.5 years...this is only a temp solution.

Outland - I am not a truck person, it must be a car of some sort...I hate trucks/SUVs etc.

Not to turn this into an x-type thread, but yes some '02's did have a lot of problems some are fine and have no problems. It depends how late in the model yr the car was built but that 6 yr warranty sure is enticing. In searching an x-type for a friend she finally settled on a loaded '01 A4 1.8. '01 has the latest 170hp engine. Car has been faultless.

Eric, I'm not "into" trucks either, but I recognize they do have there uses. The Pacifica serves my family needs better than the Jeep ever did, or any Sedan could(not enough space), but I'm still glad I have my old pounder for days like today when its been snowing since daybreak.. .and I don't want to put the Coupe out in the slop.

Point I was trying to make is that whatever you need the AWD car for(short of a rally race) you could probably accomplish just fine cheaply with a used Jeep. Hell, get a Subaru. Or a little SUV like the VUE or Escape, or CRV. X type looks nice, but damn, they are known for trouble....20K for a used troublesome car doesn't sound like a bargain to me. I think Jag will be lucky to survive as a car company the next few years. They have no identity anymore, and ford refuses to

Well...I gave in. I was going to dump the Coupe and spend another $5-10k on another car...until this snowstorm hit. Yeah, well I called the Jag dealer and told him to come pick me up and we'd have a deal. He couldn't get the car out of the lot...too much snow. That settled it.

I took my dog's car...96 Escort with 100K and traded it in. I spent the money I would have dumped into the new car and I got a 1999 GMC Jimmy with 80K. The truck is loaded, power everthing, heated mirrors, homelink, AM/FM/CD/Cassette (great for my ipod), power seats, ABS, 2wd/4wd {hi and low}/Auto 4wd...everything except leather (which I didn't want)...semi sporty with 2 doors. Nice Midnight Blue color.

I wanted to get something Jap like a Pathfinder or something but I don't want to have to look for a place to fix it...if I stick with domestic I can go anywhere around here.

I drove it for about 30 mins today and I HATED every second of it. I HATE trucks. I just faced reality, we are getting another 6 inches over the next 2 days...it's truck country here.

The coupe will sit in the garage till the weather gets better.

I HATE trucks.

Finished ranting.

I'll post pics in a few days after she's detailed, remote started, and maybe brush grilled.

Erik

EDIT: If anyone needs a carfax run, I have unlimited for 30 days...shoot me an e-mail.

You'll get over it. When everyone is stuck in the snow drifts, it won't seem so bad. Besides, now you can haul **** around. Everyone needs a vehicle like that.

Well looks like imma hafta sell it outright. Good thing I bought used. I hate the depreciation values, especially when they discontinued the model. This will apply to the sedan owners as the W204 comes out soon.

However, until MB gets their quality back up there, we dont plan on getting another one. This has been the most unreliable car I have ever owned (and Ive owned a few rat traps in my day).

reliability on the 2004, 2005's are very good so far! and i also pay $300 less on insurance for the mb compared to a 99 bmw 323i.

Eh, since this was a useless bump I might as well post pics of the truck I ended up buying. I added heated seats, GPS, GTS blackouts, Westin Nerf + Safari bars, and the Hella Lights. Those are my winter steelies, I have normal rims for the summer as well.

Wow $13 0000 !!! I was at the dealer this week and they had a couple of 2002 c-coupes for sale. The dealer is asking $28 900 for the first one (C7) and $25 900 for the second one, non C7. I know the dealer won't get that much for them but even if they knock off a couple of thousand it's still alot more than what they're going for in the US. BTW i'm in Toronto. Sounds like you guys should bring them up here and try to sell them !!!
