Tube underneath car in rear, passenger side

Earlier tonight I noticed that there is a small rubber tube (with an opening) underneath my car (05 C320) in the rear on the passenger side.

Anyone know what it is? I've tried googling for information but no success yet.

I will take a picture in the sunlight.

i think you may be talking about the overflow drain for the gas tank. try filling up you car at a bad pump and watch the fuel overflow and pour out that tube.

(i think this is what your talking about)

Rain water vent tube, my guess. I noticed it the other day myself. It appears to be quite a bit aft of the gas tank, and can't imagine MB placing a gas-related vent that close to the rear bumper.

This is a picture of the tube. The gas tank is to the left of the tube.

Sorry the underneath is dirly: lots of mud/snow/salt water. It's supposed to rain tomorrow, I'm going to see if it's a water drain of sorts.

it's a water drain that runs along the C pillars on both sides for the sunroof.

Also, open your trunk, and imagine how the rain water drains from the rear window into the trough before the trunk lid seal. Rain water runs from the center to the outer edges, then UNDER a plastic piece and disappears, to some collection point and to this tube, eventually. I think sunman is right that this tube also evacuates water from the sunroof.

Here's an experiment for one of you eager beavers. One just shoot a turkey baster full of water through the gas overflow input tube just to the right and below the gas cap. (leave the gas cap on, of course) If the water runs out that tube, we will know it's the gas overflow. If not...

btw first time I heard of that tube couple years ago when the weather was really humid and I noticed a Pajero SUV in front of me leaking water from a similar tube on the same side. And when I asked dad he said it’s a water drain for the a/c.

I have never looked for all the tubes on the W203 but my W201 has tubes all under it. Two in front for water drains for the front of the sunroof, these actually drain in front of the front door hinges! Two under the hood for the drains for the windshield water and hood! Two in the back side vents for the rear drains from the sunroof! One in the tranny tunnel for the AC and three more in the trunk area for the spare tire well and the side wells. Also I think there is even two more for the interior floor drains in case water gets in the car. These things have more damn drains and holes in them, but hey I never see water pooling inside the car or trunk.

Why would any car manufacturer incur the expense to route 15 feet of a/c compressor drain hose from the engine bay to the rear bumper of any car?

On the W201 at least it sits right next to the tranny, directly under the HVAC housing! I think it sits around the same place on the W203 as well. It can not be seen from just looking under the car either, you have to look up into the tunnel next to the bell housing to see it. Others you can see just by poking your head under there. I know the W201 layout because I have been under there way to many times in the last year!

This makes far better sense to me...
