The VIN does specify manufacturing location. The last six digits are the serial number. The letter in front of those digits is the plant id -
A through E, Sindelfingen
F through H, Bremen
J, Rastatt
T, Karmann (Osnabreuck)
X, Graz
Looks as if there are letters left out of my book for South Africa and South American plants.
And what does the rest of the VIN signify?
for WDBRF61JX1F123456
WDB = Daimler Benz (aka DaimlerChrysler)
F = Sedan body style; G long sedan, H wagon, J coupe, K cabriolet
61 = C240, 62 would be a C320, 63 a coupe???
J =American standard combination of seat belts, airbags, and belt tensioners; F and G are European options with fewer bags and ETRs
X = check digit, no meaning
1 - model year, 2001
F - plant discussed above
Cheers,
Jerry
