Gap in window seal?

as i was washing my car yesterday, i noticed a gap (a thin slit) in the window seal above the rear driver's side window about a foot from the C pillar. anyone know what this is for? it's not a problem with my seal as the gap looks manufactured; i was just curious. i'll take pics if anyone's interested.
