Might be way off on this, but this is what I've heard years ago.
I think I read that the K is for Kurt
In the olden days, the suffix "S" meant a more luxuriously equipped version of a car (e.g. 220 S as compared to the plain 220).
"E" used to denote fuel injection "einspritzung", when it was a high-performance option.
"L" = "lang" = long body
...as for the modern nomenclature, they have completely lost any meaning so far as I can tell, these days. Shame.

I have come to known these terms in my pursuit to know what the "A" in the A Class really meant...................but without luck for d past 3years, i have sold d car without knowing what A really meant. But i dont think its Affordable, at least, its not affordable in my country where its as expensive an an Expedition4x4 and a 318i.
