will the coupe beat a boxster
Will my coupe beat my friends Boxster. Its not the Boxster S, just the regular boxster. Its a 1998 i think, i know it was the first year they made them, and its an auto. I know it could with a pulley and a chip, but stock vs stock?

think V8 swap... then ask again.
I've yet to see a C230 under 7sec to 60... most boxters are low-6 cars IIRC.
(only thing I can find right now is a Boxster S in C/D... it ran 5.3)

Even with pulley and chip - no. The Boxter is much lighter than the Coupe, and its 6-cyl boxer leaves the inertial M111 inline 4-banger no chance, as it revs up much quicker.

0-60 is never going to be the coupe's strong suit. the transmission isn't designed for it. almost all cars are designed to hit 60 in second gear. this is a ploy by the manufactures to make their cars appear faster. mercedes bucked the trend to compete on numbers and properly spaced the gears on the tranny. i applaud them for that. i see other manufactures put six speeds in their cars, but don't understand why. it isn't like the ratios are much closer that that of a five speed. i guess a taller top gear could benefit fuel economy, but big deal, "my econo box POS gets 38mpg vs. the 35mpg of last years econo bucket" i guess i wasn't one of those guys that lived and died with the numbers, if i was, i would have gotten the wrx.

To me the 0-60 and 1/4 mile times are a measurement of the mods we put on our cars, pulleys, chips, intercooler, powered by stickers, exhuasts, intakes. You have to have a way to measure your results in a real world way and not just a dyno.

i'm gonna say MAYBE...because the 98 Boxster has the 2.5 engine, and if it's an auto the C-coupe might have a chance.
the 2.7L boxster 5spd runs 6.6 0-60...so i think that the 2.5L with auto will surely be slower than that. i remember they are around low 7's

the early boxster only have like 200hp and with tiptronic the 6sp coupe could hang or even beat it at high speed
the coupe could very well hang with newer non S tiptronic boxster with the boxster top down

I have run boxters in autocross. I have been able to record better times than most of them. I have not betten a Boxter S with a good driver but I have taken one that did not.

When I still had my Integra Type-R and it was stock, I beat quite a few base Boxsters on the highway and at stop light races. If the boxster was Auto, I would kill them. If it was stick, it'd be close (But I'd usually get them on the launch and then we'd be pretty even from then on).
On the highway, I was side by side (not pulling at all) against one, but I had 4 people in my car and he was alone. If I was the only guy in the car, he would've gotten whooped.
Mind you, these were all the 2.5L Boxsters. I never raced a Boxster S or any of the newer Boxsters.

It WON'T be close in a straight line. The Porsche driver would have to SUCK, and the C230K driver would have to drive perfect for it to be even close.
WORST time I saw for a Boxster in a 1/4 mile was 14.8, the BEST time I saw for a C230K was 15.3.
.5 seconds in the 1/4 mile is a HUGE difference.
Mind you, we are comparing the Boxster's WORST TIME to the C230K's BEST TIME. So the difference is AT LEAST 0.5 seconds.
The driver is important, but don't start getting out of hand and thinking the C230K can beat everything. Some of you guys gotta give your ego's a reality check. Your car isn't as fast, big deal. It was a VERY inexpensive car that looks great and has other "pluses".

You should be neck to neck and the Boxster might be about a half car length ahead to 60 mph. My aunt has a '99 Boxster Auto. It's very sluggish people. I mean the sound it makes is awesome and makes you feel like you are flying but when you look at your speedometer you haven't quite hit 60mph yet. Once underway though, the Boxster auto. or no auto. is an animal. But don't think that just because you mention Porsche it's an automatic rocket. The 6.6 sec to 60 in manual are very likely, the auto is more like 7.3 or so and it sure feels it.
Remember people we are talking about Benz Auto. and Boster Auto. not manuals so no skill here other than steering wheel control. The Benz is very sluggish on auto. especially when going through first, once seconds comes in it starts moving hard, the Porsche feels like the transmission is slipping from about0-40 then you start feeling the pulling power hard.

Cars don't win on dyno's, 0-60 times or mods for that matter. The C230 k is a heavy car that will tend to under steer, driver control is very important and the coupe is a fun car to take to the race.

I have changed the springs, struts, shocks, and anti swaybars. It has made a huge diffrent it's very nutral now and I can conrtol the car easly in a hard corner by useing the throdle to control oversteer and a quick jab on the brake to help with understeer. I would reccomend these mods for anyone that enjoys driveing there car really hard.

1) Dirve the car at the limits of traction (i.e. rally style oversteer induced turns)
2) Use left foot braking for weight transfer (our cars shut fuel off the second the brake is applied so it is impossible to maintain fuel and brake at the same time)
3) Have you experienced too much oversteer correction from throttle control?

I don't use left foot braking, but with ESP off it will not kill the fuel like with it on.
I could easly spin it out if I hammered the throttle while in oversteer. If I'm running a little hot after the apex and it starts to drift I back out just a little and it comes back in.
