Nice response Outland. Way to see you handled it maturely, seriously, unlike some other people on this forum. Wow!!!!!!! what is going on around here these days I just read a thread that had to be closed due to hostilities. People need to take it easy around here and stop criticizing each other.
One guy post hoe he ordered his new 06 c350 and the other guy bashes hime and next thing we know its canadians vs americans and MAd cow vs Mcdonalds WTF!!!!!!!!!

These threads are for mb fanatics.... appreciate what others have and learn how the vehicle works, likes/dislikes, comparisons, speed/performance, much more fun that way. I mean I'm fairly new here and I did not even know there were arguments like that. I actually felt intinidated to join Mbworld because some of you guys possess knowledge about MB that I don't have eventhough I read about it everyday. But I'm starting to rethink this whole membership cause if it's not one person annoying the other and discouraging people from mb cars it's jealousy and one insult after the other. It's crazy!!!!! Sorry to go off topic here, but DAMMMMMNNNNNN!!!

Thanks. Hey, if I'm to blame, or I messed up, I say so. DW is a good guy, and after reading so many lame responses today, I was like, hey what the heck! I screwed up.

OTOH, if youre a troll, I'll keep blasting you every chance I get.

after 2 days of driving in snow i can say the car is great in the winter. riding on stock 17" wheels and tires are no problem. if you can't handle the stock tires you better get a 4matic or learn to drive!

You must have been driving on roads clear of snow to be saying this. On packed of fresh snow the stock Mich Pilot Sports are as useful as banana peels. For these cars a set of winter tires is a must if you really want to drive with confidence.

hm....
I make it a point to take every car I've ever owned to a large, snow covered parking lot...just to see how it reacts in a slide. I did that in the E and got stopped by a mall security cop...he thought I was nuts.

But 4Matic...doesn't...slide.

Even in a sweeping turn then cranking the steering to inside full lock, I could barely get her to sway. So I turned off the ESP and tromped on it....thats when rent-a-cop pulled up.

The coupe....heheh....is a blast in the snow!

Oh wait, you were asking about the safety factor? Learn to control it, and you'll have as much fun as I do.

(the MG's get parked for the winter, but I've taken one out for slide testing....feels similar to a wet road...very little dynamics til you pull up the parking brake)

Maybe, but don't bet on it anyway - driving like that is very unsafe, you won't be able to stop when you need it. Just look at Tirerack.com, all ultra-high performance summer tires have "n/a" rating for snow traction.

No brakes will help you if there is no traction. But - whatever rocks your boat!

Huh! They still won't help you if there is no traction. I suggest you get on an empty parking lot covered by snow and see what all these clever things can do for you before you slide off the road at speed.

I totally agree with you, however if you drive at low speeds you should never get stuck especially if you are smart and use manumatic or manual gearshifts when necessary. However, I will be definitely looking for some all season performance tires Mud/Snow. DOes pirelli carry any all seasons? Probably would be expensive, but well worth it.

In my case unless I have good traction, I can't even leave my neighborhood when there is snow on the ground, as I have to drive up a very steep, although short, street. A good way to enforce having proper tires on. I tried a few times - for fun, but was thoroughly embarrassed right in front of the neighbors. Manual tranny and ESP off did not help at all - and I have done a lot of winter driving in my life. As for all-seasons, being worse than summer tires in summer and winter tires in winter, they are only good as a budget solution, that is you are not going to swap them back with the summer tires in summer. Otherwise get a set of hi-performance winter tires.
For availability, check www.tirerack.com. I have had nothing but good experience with them, having bought 6 sets from this company.

screw that... why get "hi-performance" winter tires?

Get hi-performance summer tires and "safe" winter tires!

I went to Discount tire yesterday, and got a quote for some different 18" & 19" with Dunlops and 16" steelies with syped and studded winter tires.

Off topic:

Thinking of getting one of the two: (for a black SC)
19x8 35HB

OR

(2) 19x8.5 & (2) 19x9.5

On my C55 (which is even more a nightmare in the winter) I had to take off the stock tires because they are summer only, with 17" ASA St4 knockoff rims and Michillien Pilot Alpin Pa2's my car is just fine.

I have driven it every day, even during our really bad storms and never had a single problem. It even clawed itself out of my driveway.

can't wait to get back to a good performance set up.

SUCKS, not fun at all once the road is covered, fun in empty parking lots, but scary on the road sometimes

Get the top ones. they'll look great. Nice inner deep dish lip!
I still say all seasons are the least hassle solution especially for people like me who just don't have the time to start changing tires and rims every season. Sucks!

I live in the mid-Atlantic and got Michelin Pilot Alpin PA2 tires last November. The PA2's have allowed me to go through this winter without trouble. Unlike the "safe" winter tires, these performance winter tires are excellent in the rain and very good on the cold dry roads that have characterized much of this winter.

The only time I had a traction problem was on an icy patch covered by a few inches of snow, starting uphill. Luckily I had space to back up a bit, so I did and off I went. I may yet eat my words if we finally get a "real" snow storm with ice and more than four inches of snow, but so far I am very happy with my winter tire selection.

That's just the thing... I live in Colorado and here the winter season is a little more extreme than other places.

Good point- unless they are real winter tires in your case you would get stuck in most snow storms. We here on the east coast would probably get away with other types of tires.

I said before, I live on LI and got Michelin Pilot Sports A/S, and they are great in the snow. Obviously not as much traction as winter tires, but still plenty to go around. I feel completely safe with them. But then again I also had plenty of practice of driving in the snow, and when ever I have the chance I go to a big empty parking lot and "practice" snow skids!!! They may not have the performance of the summer tires either, but they can certianly handle what this car can for street driving. If I was going to track the car, then of course I would use high performance tires.

With all respect, what most people overlook when choosing budget solutions (all-season tires in this case) is that you do not have to go to the track to justify hi-performance tires (according to the season). Hi-perf tires provide a much better grip in all situations - acceleration, turns, braking. By paying that extra that buys you these tires, you greatly enhance you own safety. Your life has no price tag (sorry for using this beaten-to-death phrase). Just think of it - these tires can be that thin line that separates safety from disaster. Plus, they look cool

No offense man, but weve all driven these tires on snow and ice. They suck.

We've had storms that have dumped upwards of 6inches on us here in detroit this season. The car and tires worked great. The main reason I chose PA2's (high performance winter tires ) was that I drive A LOT. I had blizzaks full snow tire on my S2000 last winter and it was great in snow, but if the highway was just cold and not snow covered any speed above 60mph made the car very unstable. With my current set up on the C55, when the roads are clear, i can safetly travel at and above our high way speeds (70mph is limit here).

If I didnt drive so much I may have thought of a different tire, but for a good mix you can't beat the Pa2.

Funny we're having this discussion now, as I'm getting ready to swap back to my summer set up
