Hey guys with all this bad weather here on east coast I wondered how are those of you without the 4 matic doing? I thought it would be very very bad, but guess what I just shift it to 1st or 2cnd and Comfort mode and it's pretty good. Although going up a hill by my house it did something very strange......... it went up alright but it felt like i had a flat.... can't explain it it's as if besides the traction control something else was also working the car up the hill..... it would grip slip and go........ I distinctly remember my mb salesman saying there is this new system besides the traction control that transfers the power of the drivetrain to whatever tire is not slipping....... I don't know sounds alot like traction control to me.......

All you need are good tires, and RWD is fine.

By good tires though you need winter only to get around anywhere..I have tried a few all-season's on mine and any thing more then some light snow, I play the skid, ESP game for a good part of my drive....

I was very impressed though by even an older (I think '96) E 4-matic I was given as a loaner a while ago by the dealer. All it had were all-seasons but the traction and secure feeling of knowing that the car would go in the direction I was pointing it in while driving in moderate to heavy snowfall..made me a believer in them...

With AWD you can run C7's and still accellerate in the snow- but you loose directional and stopping control just as easy as you would in a 2wd car with allseasons. So, if your car didn't go where you pointed it, it wouldn't do so anymore with AWD. Basically, whatever tires you were using weren't good enough. That E class is heavier, so that may have made the difference.

TRUE...

The car does 'OK' in the snow here and deep in the mountains with ESP and careful driving. But with anything remotely harsh (heavy snow or ice) the car definately doesn't do to well with the stock tires, simply cause they are 'sport tires (duh).

Get winter tires and you are set.

Which state in the "north-east" do you live? Here in southern-Delaware, my benz did great in the snow and ice. As for rain, that was another thing. I did not feel safe driving in rain.

On the stock Michelin Pilot Sports, i recommend keeping it away from snow, it was downright scary for me, in 1 inch of snow... Thank god I have a Jeep.

i'm using the stock Michelin PilotSports and i've gotten stuck multiple times, if you see an incline with ice on it, you better forget about it and plan on camping there til the snow melts...i almost got in an accident on the way down (luckily the curb was high enough to keep me from crashing into a sign post and fire hydrant) and on the way up, i used the wrong side because it had some pavement showing on it, took me a while and i barely made it, snow tires are a must.

Yes, the Pilots are apparently made of vaseline and wax paper, at least that's how the grip in winter is Often, its getting moving that's difficult with bad tires in 2wd, but the pilots have so little grip, that stopping can be just as much of a nightmare.

I am in NJ/NY area and my new benz faired well thus far, but it's just that traction conrol/ switching of power to opposite tire thing thtabugged me out!!!! I know what traction control feels like, but this was something different. I made it up the hill though...... You are right I will get mud and snow tires soon.. Maybe pirelli'ss get both performance and safety. Thought of using old monoblocks on M/S tires for winter, but dont think they fit.

Whats up Doc! I have Pilot Sport A/S on my C230. Runs great in the snow. Its no 4WD, but for W rated Sport tires they work pretty good. I guess if you are in a really hilly area they may not be the greatest though.

Snow is fun if you have winter tires and know how to drive.

I see SUVs in ditches most often when it snows. They think that they are invincible in those monstrous boxes. I am not talking X-country. Then of course any high-sitting truck is a winner.

Snow rulez! I am an avid wintersports fan, so I'm biased. Every fall I wait for the first snow! Skiing, snowmobiling, snowshowing, curling, sledding, hey winter is great.

BTW, most of the HUMMERS and EXCREMENTCALADES suck in the snow- b'cause the dip**** owners are running twenty two's and summer performance tires!!! Stupid aholes!

I love my car in the snow...except when it gets slushy salty out, then I use my Jeep!

I would buy chains or studded (sp) tires if I lived in north jersey/NY.

WTF did you think I was talking about? The stock tires are NOT good tires for winter. Hell, they tell you that when you buy the car even.

Get your panties out of a twist, the 'duh' was refering to my own comment. Why would I agree and then mock someone in the same response?
