C300 Sport Review
I drove a C300 sport yesterday. Upon completion of the drive, I ordered a C350 sport that will be built on August 10.
The car is very impressive. The styling is very well done. Much better than my BMW 335i. Mercedes has managed to do an excellent job regarding both exterior and interior styling. This is subjective of course.
The quality was very good also - better than the C55 I recently traded in and better than the SLK55 which I will soon be trading in. The panel gaps are consistent, but wide (as is the practice of BMW and Mercedes). The paint looked good. The interior fit was very good and I was impressed with the qualitiy of the interior materials. It is apparant that Mercedes has made a great effort to improve the quality of this car compared to the prior generation C.
I was surprised that the power of the 300 was as good as it is. I expected it to be very poor but it felt ok and I think most people will find it to be adequate. I had hesitated to order a 350 because the power is down substantially compared to a 335i. However, I think it will be fine, based on the adequacy of the 300. I expect that a 350 sport will do 0-60 in about 6.3 seconds - about 1 1/2 seconds slower than a 335i - a tradeoff for sure but acceptable.
The steering was very good - well weighted and precise, with good feedback of what the tires are doing. The brakes felt well modulated. The suspension was not quite as good as a 335i, but was very good nonetheless. The supension felt substantially better than a C55 - more sophistocated, more planted, better balanced, more compliant, with good firmness and not too much body roll.
The transmission is fine - fairly quick shifts and a good solid feel.
The pricing of the new C classs is quite good - about $5,000 less than a 335i. It is a good value for the money. Now, we wait for the C63 to get here ....
