Australian Engine Oil Specifications

Oil consumption on my new 220CDI for the first 2,700 KM is approx .8 of a litre therefore my thoughts of a top up soon.

The MB service manager recommended Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5w-30-Emission System Protection.
In a 20 litre drum this costs around $190 in the city or + $10 for freight in the bush.

Therefore about $65 per 6.5 litre oil change. MB oil filter quote was $30.

Hi Carsy. I have email'd MB today to try and get a definite answer to the question of which oil is right for which car. When/if I get a response I will post the response.

Thank you Manchester Merc,It will be interesting to see if there is a different grade used in the UK Vs Australia for the 220 CDI.

At this stage it seems that for the 220CDI:-

Mobil 1ESP Formula M 5w40 is recommended in the USA .
Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5w30 in recommended in Australia.

I have a C220CDI. Marshalls Parramatta, Sydney told me to use Mobil 1 0w-40 oil for top-ups. Now I'm confused. 5w-30 or 0w-40?

You need a 229.51 spec oil, the 0W-40 (229.5) is not designed for diesel engines with particulate filters.
