Battery Tender - Using a Cigarette Lighter Adapter

Anyone know if you can use a battery tender with a cigarette lighter adapter? To work, the the outlet needs to have power always on, not just when the ignition is on. I've tried to charge the car through the front ashtray, which doesn't work because it only has power when the ignition is in the on position. Are there other outlets that might work?

Not sure of the answer but I can tell you this: The lighter is for that purpose only. I used to charge my BlackBerry using that outlet and it blew the fuse. MB replaced the fuse for free but warned they wouldn't do it for free again as there are 2 additional outlets for such a purpose - the one in the glove and the one behind the center console. You may want to try those.

Thanks, I thought about the other power outlets but, like the lighter socket, the Owner's Manual indicates you need to have the ignition on to operate. I haven't had a chance to actually try them, though. Just wondering if anyone has dealt with this issue before.

Thanks, just read the other thread. Well... that answers my question. Too bad MB doesn't think it is important to have an always on outlet in the car. Porsche, by contrast, has plenty of them in their cars. I guess Porsche owners don't drive their cars as much as MB owners and need the ability to easily charge with battery tenders.
