Detergents are especialy hard on fish since it breaks down the protective coating on the fish skin. Only 5 parts per million will kill a fish and 1 ppm will kill the fish eggs. If you do wash at home please do it on your lawn as the ground will help to neutralize detergent before it gets into the waterways. All the water at a professional carwash is treated at the treatment plant so no harm is done to the environment.
This is some good information. Thank you.

I wish I had a touchless auto wash. I'd certainly go there sometimes!

sorry if i wouldnt want some machine to scratch the paint on such a nice car. my friend that works at a MB dealership said he's seen quite a few cars that have gone thru the dealer's car wash and come out with scratches. he told me not even to think about taking my car there to have it washed.

it's just one of those things...i would never trust a machine with my paint.

Agree. I take mine to touchless or laser washes without wheel rails. After the wash, I dry by hand. This allows me to spend more time on sealing and waxing the car.

You can tell which folks live in warm climates! I just got back from a touch-less car wash. It is 24 degrees F outside now. No way to hand wash the car, but I certainly do not want to leave all the road grime on the car.

For those who wash at home another tip is to always use a bucket with a grit trap on the bottom of your bucket. It is a small grate that fits in the bottom of the bucket. It lets fall to the bottom of the bucket and keeps the dirt from getting stirred back up into the soapy water. Always start at the top of the car and do the wheels last. You can make a quick grit trap by simply putting a cotton towel in the bottom of your soap bucket to grab the dirt as it falls to the bottom of the bucket. Just don't use it to wash anything
