true or false

When driving the 2008 C300 or C350 in S mode you burn a lot more gasoline.

true or false?

please elaborate for me, a friend of mine brought this to my attention, I'm hoping he's an idiot, since he's driving a 2007 BMW 3 Series 335i 2dr Coupe 3.0L 6cyl Turbo 6M.

It depends on your driving style. I for one leave it in S and get good mpg. The German owners manual says to always drive in S unless you are having a problem with traction due to snow, etc.

When driving in "S" Mode the gearshift stays in lower gear longer hence higher fuel consumption.

I can only go by my wife's CLK 280 which is the same engine/transmission as C300. I find C mode very annoying and sometimes someone accidentally presses the button from S to C and it annoys the hell out of me.

On S mode, I don't find that it is all that sporty. If you drive gently on S mode, it actually changes to high gear quite early, but it is quicker to respond to any changes in your driving style.

So I tend to leave it in S mode even when I'm trying to drive "economy style". I don't think this will consume more fuel than C mode.

In C mode you often press harder on the go pedal than you would have in the S mode. So economy can suffer.

This is a little confusing but as the other poster said..in the C class the C mode just starts the transmission out in second gear for starts in snow/ice. The confusing part comes in if you own any other MB products, as listed in my R class owners manual the C mode in it states that not only will it start in second gear but it also remaps the transmission shift points to allow for quicker less harsh shifts. The C class manual lists nothing of the sort, just the added traction gained from starting in second gear.

actually thats not entirely true. sure it starts in 1st gear but it also holds each gear longer than in C mode and I believe also firms up the suspension. (tho the suspension one I'm not 100% sure on)

Not C mode again....

<<actually thats not entirely true. sure it starts in 1st gear but it also holds each gear longer than in C mode and I believe also firms up the suspension. (tho the suspension one I'm not 100% sure on)>>

Where does this stuff come from?

In C mode, the trans starts in 2nd, upshifts at lower RPMs and uses a higher geared reverse, all for coping with low traction conditions.

The suspension is not in the picture.

Seems like there are many stipulations here. I have been able to get my best gas mileage in S mode. Thats in my 08 C300 4 matic, 29.4 MPG, 40 mile trip.

C saves fuel compared to S, physics and the owner's manual will tell you so.

Lol I just knew when I read this thread that someone was going to say it controlled the suspension..never fails.

Actually the C class owners manual is really vague on this subject. If you read the C manual it would lead you to believe its best to keep the trans in S mode and only use C mode for winter starts. Yet in my R manual it makes you lean to the C mode for daily use stating it will give you a more comfortable ride (smoother shifts). I keep my C in S mode for the simple fact I have a C300 and can use all the extra pep I can get just trying to get on interstate.

Not sure about "A LOT" more gas, but you will burn more due to the higher revs.
