On long drives (EX: from San Francisco to LA), I always pay attention to road sign on the highway notifying me of when the next gas station is ("Next gas in 26 miles.") On surface streets, one has no excuse for running out of gas.
87 octane won't kill your car; it will only decrease the efficiency and power of your car, temporarily. But I do wonder: how clean is the inside of your lawnmower's gas tank? As clean as that of your car? ACK!
But as QQQ said, it's useless worrying about things you cannot change.

Sorry if everyone's comments sound so sarcastic/derogatory. We don't mean to be. At least I don't. But you gotta admit, this was a pretty "bone head" error on your part. I think that's why everyone's having so much fun at your expense.
In any case, don't worry about it too much. Whatever happened happened, and your car is in almost all likelihood totally fine. No permanent damage, probably. So stop worrying about it, and just never do this again.

i like to ride my bike
as the others above have stated, it shouldn't be a problem that you run on 87. Your tank probably wasn't completely empty either! the new cars only let you start with an minimum amount of gas...so i doubt it was dry.

Well....I feel so bad that I am seeing the "car pumping gas" symbol after running a while on the reserve gas. But the displays says another 40km I can drive, so I just keep running on the reserve until I see that symbol. I hope I didn't do much harm to the car...Altogether I fill up 58litres for $80!!!
