Is using Tiptronic (+/-) Shifting Safe?
Is it is safe for the car? I hear from some that say its bad, while others say it is "fool" proof and that it is fine...Does anyone have any solid information?

It is basically fool proof. The car won't let you shift down if it's not ready to do so. Also if your going to down shift give it a bit of gas to spike the RPMS a bit so the shift is smoother. As you drive with it more and more you will really get a feel for the car and will know when it's ready to shift. Obviously if your going for max power you will redline the gears as you go through them. The worst thing that you can do though is shift from 2nd gear to 1st gear to soon, and Mercedes cars don't allow you to do that.

if you hold the shifter left for a couple of seconds while in drive the tranny will automatically select the lowest gear that it can safely cruise in for that speed. and it will change gears itself if it needs to.
it is still an automatic transmission and will act like one. just think of your changing gears manually as more of a suggestion that the car is not obligated to follow if it doesn't want to.

This is only in the 'C' or 'S' mode. In the 'M' mode, then it's full manual - the car will not auto shift for you when you hit redline in a particular gear. You then take full control. Also, on the dash, the display then tells you which gear you are in (1 to 6 or 7)
I know the C & S switch only have those two options and I don't see where else to choose "M".

Do your research before calling out BS. This is standard on the sports model in Europe. There is a world outside of the US. Watch the dash display on this video.
