2011 E350 Sport 4matic
4475 Mile Road Trip Results

Just got back from a long road trip (4475 total miles over 12 days) from Colorado to the Northeast and back. C300 Sport 4matic did great. Not a single issue. Actual mileage for the entire trip was 28.29 mpg, based on keeping track of exact amounts of fuel added during the trip. FYI, trip computer said average mpg for trip was 27.1

Nuvi 350 confirmed that speedometer was always one MPH optimistic (e.g., 71 indicated was actually 70).

Was not trying to get good mileage. In fact, was usually moving between 75 and 80. But with stops and local travel at those places we stayed a few days, overall speed averaged 61 MPH. Highest speed Nuvi recorded was 114 (passing on two-lane road in Kansas).

2008 220CDI Sport Auto Estate, Obsidian Black, Black leather, Heated Seats,Pan Roof, Comand,
I have just returned from a 2000 mile trip across Europe and the C220 CDI Estate returned an average of 42 mpg with an average speed of 64 mph. Highest speed was 120 mph on the Autobahn in Germany. Thought this was pretty reasonable considering the car had only done 700 miles before I set out.

but your diesel costs more... equate the extra cost to your greater MPG and I bet you get a true MPG closer to about 30 MPG

True with the widening gap between petrol and diesel prices, the benefit of higher mpg with a diesel engine is slowly eroding away.

BTW, my 320cdi returns an average of 31 mpg. Shows you how the 220cdi is so much more frugal at 42 mpg. And with the diesel prices at the moment, I'm really suffering.

But then it's great fun to drive. Dare I say, I took it to 151mph last week.

Careful comparing MPG. You're in UK and the gallon is different from the "Yanks", and your MPG will be more optimistic than the Americans. I made the mistake once comparing MPG with my American cousin! It took us a while to figure out why I was getting almost impossibly high MPGs.... I was converting metric (L/100km) to UK MPG!

Yeah I understand what you are saying but we went through all this MPG stuff in a previous thread and the outcome was still in favour of the Diesel.
