At just about 2k miles now, I've just turned on my "Sport" mode and wheeee!!!
So my gas mileage is approx 18 :P. But on average I was getting 23/24 with normal driving. Long trips are truly where these cars shine and I fully expect 28/29 on 100+ mile steady driving.

i took a road trip to az this weekend, and at 80 mph steady driving I get 23.5 mpg with the ac on and 24 mpg with the ac off. I didn't turn the ac off very much though. it's well over 100 degrees in arizona!
at 85 mph, my mileage was 22.5 and at 75 mph I get 26 mpg.

For our first 9K miles other than long road trip, overall average is 24.5. On recent 4475mile trip, worked out to be 28.3. (That is C300 Sport 4matic--with AC always on.)

If I leave it in C, baby the hell out of the gas pedal, coast as much as possible, keep the pano roof closed all the time, I can usually just manage 23mpg combined and 28mpg freeway.
Sadly my BMW 330i, with same size engine producing more hp, could achieve 23mpg combined and 31mpg freeway with absolutely no babying ... just regular joe driving. But to be fair, it was a manual.
Even worse, my Q7 4.2 (big honkin' heavy tank, 4.2 car motor that likes to rev and full time awd) I get 16mpg combined and 21mpg freeway over the same routes ... absolutely babying it, but still that's not terribly far off the 300 and it's moving around like 5500lbs.
I guess my point is: I believe the C300 should do marginally better on the mileage. I'm wondering if it's the aero or the automatic transmission that's sucking some of the mpg out.

On a 400+ mile road trip back in November '07 I got 26 hand calculated at the pump. These days I usually hand calc around 23-24 +/- I can't see these heavy **** cars getting more than 26, even if driving with an egg under the gas pedal. Perhaps with a tail wind on you the entire time?

I have a C300 Sport, manual transmission, ~6200 miles.
I just took a 380 mile trip each way from SF Bay Area to LA this past weekend. Got 28.1 MPG on the way down, 28.3 MPG on the way up. I don't drive very slowly, and I had AC on full blast the whole time.
On surface streets I drive much, much more conservatively to get around 18.2 MPG. If I push it a bit, I get 16 MPG.
