Looking at the intake volume I really can't see any improvement with aftermarket but I could be wrong. Seems to be more than enough volume for our size of motors.

excuse my ignorance...
why is hot air bad? i thought as long as it's clean air going in, it will help burning the fuel. please educate me.
I have seem many air intake system like this. the only thing i am weary about this one is that it's not manufactured by any known company (is there even a name?) and there is no numbers backing it up.

Hey AZN

did you notice any difference after installing your K&N filter?
did you do it yourself or you B.I.L did that for you, too?

it has nothing to do with volume...well it does but not at the specific point we're discussing. its sucking hot NON condensed air into the mix (which is where the volume of air is affected...after passing through the intakes). you could pull the stock intake tubes off and achieve the EXACT same thing as those foam filters do. And assuming you don't take the paper filters out of the stock housing...then you have twice the restriction of airflow. Pull the stock intakes out...let the car heat up and then drive it hard off the line. you will feel the loss of low end torque. in essence these engines have a very efficient cold air ram intake system right out the box. nothing out there after market right now adds any benefit as far as intakes go.

Hot air has less oxygen(less dense) so you have less to burn extra fuel and make more power. Hot air also can lead to retarded timing (less power) as detonation can occur.

When you see the open filter design it's mainly useful on cars the tuck the filter outside the engine bay in the fenderwell or down low to pick up cooler air. We have a decent cold air intake as where this filter design would just be sitting behind the radiator soaking up hot air.

Nothing noticeable in terms of power. Slight upgrade in MPG on long distance. Just popped it in myself.

Azn_C300...DON'T oil them. just wash them every few thousand miles. the oil will burn the filaments on the MAF especially with the design of the engine. the MAF sits directly under the airbox housings so gravity alone is against you. new filter (paper) a few bucks...new filter (K&N or Green) 50-60 bucks, new MAF or 02 sensors, 800 or so. be careful.

I heard this was only an issue with over oiling it and not following the correct procedure.

BUT with K&N filter not oiled.. are they gonna be able to trap all the dirty particles and keep them from going into the engine?

I heard these intakes make a nice growl sound tho. Hmm if they are their to just look good and make a nice sound and I won't lose power, I might do it. But if I'll lose power, then no way.

the rule here is, GENERALLY...anything small enough to get through the filter "should" burn up in combustion but even that accumulates after enough time. i leave the paper filters in 99% of the time then use K&N when on the track. when running it hard the extra air the k&N lets in is beneficial (i guess) but under normal driving conditions they make little difference. since the replacement filters (K&N) are the exact same dimensions as stock your not even going to get that growl (which is made audible by the less restrictive airflow). you have to remember...sucking more air in through the intakes (the entry point) doesn't do much if the engine can't let it out...headers, exhaust, etc.

IMO I think the K&N was totally worth it. I mean I'm getting a greatly improved gas mileage on the highway (not city) and a very minor performance boost when running the car hard. Main thing that made me not regret it was the gas mileage. I'd say if you have the extra money go for it, if not, its not worth it.
