C300 Rev limiter?
Ok, so I test drove the 6spd for a second time at the dealership, and I really wanted to push the car to its limits. I kept running into the RPM limit at around 4k-5k where the engine would "stall" until the RPMs were in the designated "safe zone". Can anyone who owns a 6spd confirm whether or not this is a dealership installed function that is removed when bought? Or is this something MBUSA put in as a "safety" measure? (It's more of a hazard than a safety mechanism...)

4-5K? I think peak power is around 6K. I have the C350, but I think even the C300 redlines in the 6xxx RPM range, probably higher than mine. 4-5 doesn't sound right. Maybe the dealer programmed the ECU for test drives?! Haven't personally heard of such a thing, but I guess I wouldn't be surprised. That or maybe something was messed up on the car?!

I encountered the same problem testing a BMW. - engine just quit at 4000rpm. A very embarrassed salesmen discovered that the service dept had forgotten to remove the safety limiter, installed during shipping. I guess its put there to stop the shipping guys having too much fun!

1) Thats why some people have issue with buying a demonstrator - would you be willing to buy it.
2) You never stated what gear you were in when this occured while abusing the car on the test drive.

I couldn't agree more and is the reason why I either order a new car or I check the inventory to see if I can find one with like 3 miles on it.
During both of my test-drives the salesman told me to push ( C300 and C350 ) them hard to see what they were capable of
I have heard of the factory installing rev limiters on new cars before shipment as well. Makes perfect sense to me and I support it.
Sounds like you had a rookie salesman.

My C300 goes over 6,000 RPM.
My automatic C300 goes over 6,000 RPM, when floored.

My C300 6speed rev. limiter kicks in at 6400-6500rpm.
The first 2800 miles it never saw more then 3500rpms btw.
When I buy a new car, 0-15 miles is the max that is on the odometer since I don't want a beat up test drive *****.

uh...did you not read what others said?
dealership can put a rev limiter lock on it with STAR if they want. for test drives they are definitely not going to let you **** up their brand new car. some dealer doesn't car, some do.
