Conti Pro Contact Tires
Don't feel all that bad. I have had my 2008 C300 for 9 months and have had 4 flat tires and one tire that had the tire monitoring unit brake off in the tire. I ran over some glass and 2 tires had flats within 2 days. Both tires had to be replaced because thry were pierced right at the spot where the flat part of the tire and the sidewall meet. I then ran over a small nail which I had repaired. 1 month goes by and while rotating the tires I find a bubble on the inside sidewall of a back tire. When I removed it I could hear something rolling around inside. It was a saturday night so I took the tire to PepBoys and had them remove it from the rim. That is when I found the monitor. $82.00 for a new unit + $188.00 for another new tire. I have been driving 39 years and never had a flat. In fact the last automobile I had was a 2005 Lexus GS300. This car had runflats on it. I had to remove them because it felt like you were driving a steamroller. I was going to replace all the tires with Goodyears but the salesman at Goodyesr said he had no tires that would ride as quietly as the Conti Pro Contacts. Go figure

Not yet two weeks into ownership, I picked up a screw in the tire. The screw was lodge just beyond the "safety line" so no honest tire shop in my area would plug it up for me. I paid some shady shop to do it for $15, and ordered a new tire online. I think the total cost came out to something like $285. TireRack.

18" sport ttires... are expensive
that is sort of why when I get a C300 I am probably going to get the 17s as there is much more selection.
I had a G35 coupe before with 18s. Michelin pilot sports. I think $300 a piece and they only lasted about 12k miles.
At least they aren't runflats. My friend damaged the sidewall of a 17" runflat on a 3 series and it was $400 to fix at the dealer (the week he got the car too).
if your tires are already somewhat worn, it might be worth it to just replace them all with cheaper all season performance sport rated tires, if you don't need the absolute best tires (i've got A-s performance tires now, and its barely a dropoff from summer performance like the conti3s)

2008 R350 & 2008 C300
I'm guessing he had a hard time finding the exact same tire. There are other Conti models and other manufacturers that make tires that would fit. Some may know this and to some this may be new, but the tires that come on cars from the factories are usually a lower grade of tire than the commercial tires that are sold at retailers. This accounts for why the tires don't seem to last near as long (thread life) as tires you buy to replace them. This also explains why its so hard to find the exact tire to replace one, they have different numbers or names to separate them from their commercial counter parts. This is good for the tire manufacture as they can sell you another set to replace the ones that worn out so fast and it benefits the car manufacture because they get a good deal when buying them. Seems like the only person this doesn't benefit is the consumer...go figure.

That's actually pretty normal for OEM 18" prices.
I'm planning for some BFGoodrich g-Force KDW's if I ever switch tires. I loved them in my previous cars.

Inexpensive tire
If you are looking to go to a cheapo tire, try www.edgeracing.com and search by tire size. They have some Nexxens that are very inexpensive and have a longer tread life rating. The 280 rated Conti 3's wear out faster than say a 380 rated Nexxen.
I used those tires once on an Acura CL-S. They worked fine and had a great tread life even on the front wheel drive.
