hey guys have I made a mistake?

Hey MBworld I have now had my beautiful C350 for about 3.5 weeks now and Have had to drive it around town and I have been guilty of opening up the car a bit the first dew days into having the car, now my question is if this will effect my car. I myself dont knwo much about cars but when I told my friend about this he told me I shouldnt have done that, he said I should have waited to put some miles ont he car before breaking it in. SO my question to you gusy is if htis will be a huge deal or should I be worried about the car? thanks In advance.

There is nothing better than smashing the throttle to break the engine in. We AMG guys do it all the time. There is no damage to your car whatsoever. Don't beat yourself up over it.

The only real advice the salesmen gave me was not to use the Cruise Control within 500 KMs but I make that mistake of confusing it with the turn signal a few times within that period, its fine, just broke 5000KMs and I rip it everyday and still loving it!

Relax man, It happens to demonstrators all the time & they see many miles. I have found that if I run an engine in a little hard it frees up earlier, revs higher & is very flexibible ( pulls a higher gear) for the rest of its life.Although I would not do it if I intended to keep it for 15 years!!

i hear 2 different side of theories
1 is ur not suppose to rape it until it gets runned in
2 is ur suppose of rape it hard for it to run in

ill just do a oil change 3000 to 5000km regardless

Maybe maybe not, I too have heard different sides. From personal experience, I hammered a new C55 from the start and it ended up needing 2 quarts every 8-9 thousand miles. I went easy on a new CLK63 and it has not needed any oil added between services. I read somewhere that the AMGs are broken in but not sure about the validity of that. FWIW- I will go lightly on the 350 for the 1st thousand or so then just drive it normally.

I've been checking this forum for the last 2 months or so regarding this topic.
According to some it does not matter at all because it is a Benz and don't worry about it.
According to others for the first 1000 miles you should break it in gently so the engine oil can seal the engine properly otherwise you will burn more oil and gas. Be easy on the tranny, don't use Sport mode and don't use cruise control.
It seems a lot of people have different opinions but is there any proof either way
Until a Benz engineer personally tells me otherwise I would take it easy for the first 1000 Miles.

I spoke to my mb mechanics about this issue. Apparently, these cars are good to go from the start. Nothing to be worried about. Drive fast and enjoy!

This is not true, there are specific break in procedures you should follow in order to have a properly running engine.

Keep the speed below 130-140 km/hr, under 90mph, accelerate and break gently, avoid keeping the engine at the same speed.

You can do what you want with your car, but these are the proper instructions.

There is absolutely no harm in smashing the throttle once in a while during this so called break in procedure. The best engines are the ones that are broken in hard.

as long as you didn't mash the throttle before the engine actually warmed up you'll be fine.

I think you're right.

Problem I had was that my salesman said that I didn't need to break it in so I didn't know anything about it until I got to around page 150 of the owner's manual to learn of the break in procedure. Seems entirely stupid to put something that important that far into the manual. If I had it to do over again, I'd been more careful driving it home from the dealer which was around 100 miles.

This seems like a reasonable question, but the reality is that no one knows. If you spend any time on auto forums of any make or model (okay, maybe not those Indian cars), you'll know that break-in period questions are continually asked and then the debate rages. "Drive it like you stole it. It will ensure the rings are seated." "You need to follow the break-in procedures in the manual. They wouldn't have put it in there for no reason; there goes your warranty." As an aside, Porsche has a 2,200 mile break-in period for 911s sold in the US and 500 miles for those sold every where else. It's the same freakin car! Ultimately, you would probabaly need to run a controlled test of identical motors, one that followed the manual's break-in procedures and one that did not (keeping all other variables constant), and then dismantle the motors to analyze any differences. Without this, the seemingly reasonable question of whether to follow break-in procedures is in my opinion a dumb question with no answer. Heh, someone should start a thread on the dumbest questions asked.
