I got some bad news regarding UMI and TeleAid...received reply back from MBUSA and was confirmed if you have TeleAid, you can not have UMI..
There seems to be some wiring conflict that will cause UMI to not function properly..
MBUSA told me they are working on a new wiring solution but no release time yet...

I don't think UCI will give TMC to MM cars...it's just a fancy/more advanced iPod kit w/ more connectors and didn't add anything to the hardware part of MM command console..

What about US w204's with audio 20 - will UMI enable TMC ? I saw literature on this but not sure if it actually works in the US. http://www.benzblogger.com/2008/11/u...-2010-glk.html That would suck if MM doesnt get TMC and UMI does.

UMI Installation on RHD, The Connectors
The route the wiring harness (goes to the HU) and video cables (one goes up to the display and the other to the HU).
The OLD connector taken from the HU and to be connected to the couple at the wiring harness that came with the UMI. Remove the small connector with orange wires shown. This is an optical cable. Be careful not to damage it.
The NEW connector from the harness. Connect this to the HU. It is easier to take out the black and white small connectors first, so the locking lever can be easily lifted. After plug in to the HU and locked, the black and white connectors can be put back in place. The connecter with the orange wires (above picture) can be pluged in now in this NEW connector.
Connect the other connectors back to the HU, except the video cable. The OLD video cable should be routed to the passenger's side to be connected to the UMI main unit. This cable is routed through a plastic tube/sleeve to the HU. To take a shorter and direct route, the cable can be taken out of this tube/sleeve. With the help of the SHORTER video cable, it will reach the UMI main unit.
Connect the LONGER video cable that came with the UMI to the HU and route it also to the passenger's side. The result is the first picture above.

UMI Installation on RHD, The Main Unit
In front of the passenger's side, behind the carpet there is a metal plate with plenty of space to put the main unit there. Remove the 3 nuts and tilt the plate all the way back.
There is a lot of ways to secure the main unit there. I used big tyraps as shown in the picture below. Make sure the side nearer to the center of the car is the one with harness and video connectors. Connect these connectors and also the other connectors to the other side of the main unit.
The plate on its original position with the main unit in front of it. Please note that the 3 cables have not been plugged in. This is just to make sure the main unit is in perfect position.

OK, latest update...MBUSA called me today and said after further research, UMI and TeleAid can co-exist...
All it required is a different center speaker that can hook up to both TeleAid and UMI...
(The default one come with TeleAid or UMI can only accept one set of input)

Justthinking, are you gonna install it, now that you know TeleAid and UMI can co-exist?
I assume if you buy/install UMI in the US you get US map for the GPS uploaded already. Anyone knows how to upload the UMI GPS map for those who want different map?

356SC, my dealer quote me $1,900 installed and I most likely will pull the trigger..
Still waiting to hear back from the product specialist from MBUSA and my SA at dealership regarding when the new speaker will be available..
As far as updating map, they told me it can be done via the onboard USB port..
Instead of an update DVD, UMI owner will get a usb drive w/ update content and simply update by stick it in the UMI's usb connector..

I have standard auido 20 which normally doesn't come with center speaker....
The center speaker I have now is installed by the factory when they equip my car with TeleAid and was used by TeleAid only...
If my car didn't have TeleAid, then when the dealer install UMI, they would install a center speaker that came with the UMI kit and the center speaker in this situation would be used by UMI's navigation voice guidance only...
As far as I know, sound system and teleaid or sound systme and umi would work just fine..
It's when you have all three, that things become tricky..I suppose to hear back from my SA tomorrow with a definte answer to this new center speaker solution and I will share what I find out..

Got my car back from the dealer today with UMI fully installed, up and running..
So far, I am pretty impressed but have a few bones to pick..
1. Had to press the clr button next to control wheel in order to access Navigation..really wish MB would change the tone button on Audio 20 to Navi like those of Audio 50 or Command..
2. Volume for iPod, USB, bluetooth audio streaming & new aux port are too low..just like the original aux port..when switching between CD and UMI, the difference in volume is really annoying..
3. Still not able to display Asian language characters such as Chinese & Japanese..
I think the issue with low volume for aux port is something MB really should address, I also don't think it's that difficult to include more fonts, not input method, just additional language fonts..
My SA told me the UMI kit they received from MBUSA is already the updated version with "DUAL-MODE" center speaker that can hook up to both Tele-Aid and UMI..
I don't have Tele-Aid activated right now so I will probably go to dealer again to have them test and make sure Tele-Aid is fully operational in case I want to activate again in the future..

Hi Justthinking,
As soon as I read your posting, I went to my car with one original CD that I used to rip to my iPod. Strange, I can not hear the difference in volume playing back and forth same track/song between CD and iPod connected via UMI.
AS for the navi button, is the 'cir button' you entioned above same as the 'C' button. To access it I press and hold the 'C' button.

356SC, I really think MB should have address the low volume issue with a build in amplifer in the UMI connectors box..
Don't know if UMI has engineering menu available, maybe there are settings in there that can raise the volume..
I will most defintely call the parts & accessories specialist at MBUSA on Monday to ask for his help regarding this issue..
The clr button I am talking about is the one by the control wheel behind the gear shifter..
There is another clr button which is located by the dial-pad but that one do not brings out the Navi menu..
My bottom line price is just under $1,800 for the whole UMI kit installed...
This price includes parts, labor, tax & some additional discounts that my SA was able to add onto my account..
Oh, I am missing one more thing, my old aux port which is non-function now didn't get covered or taped over..
(3.5mm aux input is now located in the front of the UMI connectors box)
356SC, if not too much trouble, can you take a picture of all that's left over from your installation?
I only get 1 operation manaul & 1 warranty/license agreement, no left over parts or changed down parts..

Justthinking,
Here are the picture of the original package. 2 items on the lower right hand corner, the extractor and keyring are additional purchase.
The only thing that are left: center speaker (cause I have HK), the velcros and the manual/waranty. Nothing is taken from the car. I even left the old aux input jack attached, cause I don't have anything to cover with.
I took a short video to show you the different in the volume we're talking about. Let me know if you can play it. I never post a video in this forum before> http://www.flickr.com/photos/37457623@N07/3472936822/

Did you mention how much you paid for the kit, I did not find that from your earlier posts? Since it is a RHD car, I would assume a lower price than that indicated by US owners (which again sounds really odd, usually US prices are a lot lower).

Diesel Benz,
Sorry I did not mentioned the price. I thought no one was interested, since it was the price quoted by www.comandonline.co.uk. Anyway it was GBP 680 for the UMI kit (no VAT for export) and GBP 51.25 for the shipping. So using an exchange rate of 1 GBP = 1.47 USD it equals to around USD 1,075.
The price has nothing to do with the RHD. It is just that I can not use the GPS map data, since it is loaded with Europe map only. I'm still asking around on the possibility to have a local map uploaded.

I hope they have live traffic on the 2010 MM packages...
and it shouldn't it be possible to update for all the existing ones, since every car has the FM radio?

I hope that there is an MM/map update that enables tmc ifor u.s. specc systems. I dont understand why this isnt enabled at this point.
