I've discovered something else about the HK system - it will not play surround mp3s (actually it will but in normal stereo and not surround). I was actually looking forward to encoding the DTS (DVD Audio) albums into mp3s so that I could load it into the SD card but unless MB update COMAND to play surround mp3s I will have to find a way to burn them onto an 8.7 Gb DVD as DVD audio...

As I understand it, simply burning a bunch of mp3's onto a DVD won't get you DVD-Audio. It simply gives you a lot of stereo mp3, although you can obviously fit many tracks on one disc. also you will not benefit from the higher resolution of the DVD-audio format (24 bit/195khz vs. 16 bit/44 khz for CD)

DVD-A uses similar audio formatting as a DVD-Video disc. The source has to have 6 tracks of information (5 channels+1 subwoofer = 5.1 surround).
Lots of good info. here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_Audio including a list of software that can be used to create DVD-A's.

Thanks for the link, very useful. Actually I meant compiling a few DVD-A albums into one DVD as DVD-Audio - sorry did not make myself clear.

Can anyone tell me if you need the HK sound system to play the DVD Audio and the DTS formats ? Can't the higher-end COMMAND unit do it ?

I think that the non HK COMAND will play a DTS DVD-Audio disc but will not reproduce it as surround, i.e. it will play them as normal stereo discs.

I stand to be corrected though...
