Changing OEM Xenon bulbs

I was wondering if anyone has changed their OEM 4300K Xenons to another Kelvin value. I was thinking about fitting 8000K bulbs, they seem like the perfect color for me.

Now are there "brands" that I should buy? Are the cheaper bulbs worse or do they give less light or something?

I saw Lumenux™ 8000K D1S bulbs and some other no-namers on eBay. Anyone with recommendations? (DRL = always on in my car) Feel free to quote brands, prices and links to shops that supply Europe.

Thanks for the help!

Anything over 6K will reduce the lumens by a large amount. The color may look good but the light output will be pretty low.

I have changed mine to 8000k when I took delivery of my ride and they look delicious on the W204

Bought through a friend and the bulbs came "unbranded".

+1 for 8000k

If I would go for 6000K, whats the difference between a $100 bulb and a WHOPPING $250 for a Philips brand?

Are they 2.5 times better?

The Philips bulbs will be the best in quality, output, etc etc. The cheaper, brandless bulbs aren't bad though, and for the price difference, may be a better option.

More than 6000ºK doesn't look classy for my personal point of view, too blueish.

I changed mine to 6000K generic D1S's. They look gorgeous, but didn't want to do 8000K's because of the decreased light output.

But is the difference betweek 4500K and 6000K so noticeable? 8000K might be blue (in the light) but they give a nice crisp white..

difference between 4300K and 6000K is noticable, but not a gigantic difference. 8000K looks flat out purple and there is a fair dropoff in lumens. In the end it's your choice.

Very noticeable. Love the blue color it outputs with no hint of yellow.

D1S. It's different fitments for diff applications. I don't think the D2S will fit, I could be wrong though.

Stock is 4300K

Factory fitment is D1S. The difference between D1S and D2S is that D1S has the igniter on the back of the bulb itself.

That means those D2S bulbs you ordered aren't going to work.

So basically, any HID system involves 3 major components. A bulb, igniter, and ballast. The bulb produces the light. The igniter is the piece that sends the large voltage through the bulb when you first turn it on. The ballast supplies the correct current to the system to make it work.

On D2S systems, all of these are separate pieces. Some HID systems integrate the igniter into the ballast.

On D1S systems, the igniter is built into the back side of the bulb.

Otherwise, D1S and D2S are the same. Same light output etc etc.

D2S:

Hah, I probably should have used different symbols to abbreviate the type of bulb. I see though...hmm. I'm a complete amateur when it comes to bulbs.

8000k. It's blueish, but not overly so and looks great with our projectors. Up close, they look more white, but from further back, you get a slight bluish tint. It's nowhere near purple. You will take a hit on visibility, but I've never had any problems to be honest at night.

My 6000K's seem more bluer then that ^. Either way, don't go over 8000K (some guys do 10K) or else your just looking for a hard time at night.
