Comand System 4.9" Display replacement with 7"

I should be getting my new C-Class C180 1.6 BlueEffeciency next month.

All vehicles in my country come with 4.9" display including the Avantgarde. I found this on Ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Merce...fAudioQ5fVideo.

Will this work for Euro cars?

Thanks

I believe this is a Japanese Comand, the display should be the same as for European cars but the Comand head unit again should be different.

I would check the MB part numbers in any case.

Are you actually only after the display or would you want to upgrade the head unit too?

And which country is it where Comand is not available and Euro devices are used? Sounds odd.

@ Diesel Benz, thanks for your quick reply.

I'm after upgrading the head unit including the motorized function which is not available in the 4.9" unit (pic attached).

The command command is available, but the screen is too small and does not have GPS function as well as DVD and backup camera.

Moreover, this C180 is imported from Germany. In addition, we have locally assembled C280 (Avantgrade) and C200 Kompressor (Elegance).

Finally, I live in Egypt

I'm a bit confused with your comment. The head unit id the part below the air nozzles, it is a completely separate unit from the display.

The display would be only a display independently if it was a big or small one. There is an Audio 50 APS head unit with navigation, still using the small display. There is also a UMI retrofit kit that provides navigation with the small display.

Officially the Comand head unit and the big display should come together (I mean not mixed one or the other way) but some experts claim the displays should be compatible except that a specific wiring would be needed if Comand was using the small display or vice versa, other head units using the big display.

Maybe I didn't make myself clear. Sorry for that. All I want is to change the small dispaly 4.9" which is standard in Classic version to 7", and be able use video on the move, backup camera, & DVD which is not available in Audio 20.

Therefore, I was under the impression that I have to change every thing OEM, if Im not mistaken.

Is there is another alternative?

@ alexyanglaw:

How did you know is Chinese? If so then this would be good 'cause currently I have a generic 7" DVD 1 Din player that amazingly playes every video & audio format on CDs and even RW DVDs.... It also has a TV tuner and SD card reader

Hi, DJ Kyro

Thanks for the warm welcoming.

Actually, I registered in the form some time ago. However, I was looking for a used W203 but as you may already know the resale prices for MB in Egypt are quite high compared to any other brand. Therefore, I decided to pay the difference (which is not much) and get a brand new one in terms of mileage !!!, shape & technology.

Are they different countries? I cannot understand the "letters" anyway so sounds like the same country.

The big display would not give any additional functionality to that you can get from the small display (excluding the opening/closing style and a larger screen).

If you want video, you would have to change the Audio 20 unit with a Comand.

That's current. You need to switch head units, which should give you navigation capability as well.

There's no trunk unit correct?

Hi, ahegazi. I looked at the e-bay listing and have the exact same unit in my C 300 Avantgarde Sport. I love it. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with the 4.9" display, so I can't really comment on the compatibility (sorry). I opted not to get the backup camera, since it has Parktronic and is a relatively small car, but this unit is compatible.
You may want to check out the backup camera / video in motion package from (oh, crap, I can't remember the company name, but it's been in a few previous threads--do a search for VIM).
With regard to the e-bay picture, I have confirmed that the language displayed on the screen is indeed Chinese, but that's a non-issue, since you can easily change the display language ( I changed mine to English from Japanese).

Hope that helps. I could post a pic if it would be helpful. Let me know.

>Edit: You should be careful buying a unit from another country, as the maps in the Navi will probably be for that region only, not your area. The DVDs to update maps are (apparently) available, but are expensive.

I am new to this, and I am happy that I have joined.
Referring to your posts, I need to know if all of the MB cars assembled in Egypt do not have a GPS hardware installed or they do have it? Second question is, since we are paying so much money for our cars, much more than Beamers, why is the hardware installed in Beamers and not in MBs? There are even some of the cheap cars in Egypt having not only the GPS, but the maps of Egypt too, to be able to navigate. I know that the Navi system is independent of the screen size, so if you have a GPS and you have Maps the system will work, but is there a compatibility issue purchasing things from a country and using it in another country, despite that language that appears on screen?
