I must be an exception here, but... after a year and a bit I'm still very satisfied with the C. There's definitely some quirks about the car, but it suits everything I was looking for (a little more luxury over sport, and great looks).
Despite all the new cars coming out, I think I still would have stuck with the W204 if I had to make the choice today.
If that answer's not good enough... then gimme an A5.

It really depends on what you need. Personally I was driving a '08 E280 Elegance before I sold it (suspension was too soft for my liking and I didn't like the handling overall) and got the C280 Avantgarde, which I later realized was too small, too hard riding and too yupeeish for my age (I'm 38). Having owned the E and disliking the 5er's driving position, I was left with 2 choices: S-class and the 7er. Dealers had some great end of year AND model offers on the 7er, so I went for a 740Li. Very impressed, very happy. Very spacious, very comfortable, very sporty to drive and handles great (for the size of course). With residuals currently at about 50% after 2 years, I would strongly recommend you consider a a '06 750Li, but if you must have AWD, or find the 7er too big for your needs. I would recommend you consider an A4 quattro

So, update here ... drove the E300 and it's actually a great car; deals on it to be had for sure.
Priced a GLK as well, and now considering getting rid of my C300 AND RDX to get 2010 GLK and 2008 B200 Turbo ... or 2009 E200 and 2008 B200 Turbo. Good idea or not?
Also saw a 2008 A6 S-Line, loaded; that's the only non MB option for sure.
What do you guys and gals recommend?

+2 On the Acura TL. The TL WAS the car I was expecting to buy when I was looking down the road as the previous version was one hellava deal. When the TSX came out and the spy shots of the new TL were hitting the web I started to look at other options. When I came back from Afghanistan, the 1st commercial I saw in the airport was for the new TL where it breaks through the wall of bricks, it was at that time that I said to myself "holy ***** is that thing ugly".
I saw the pictures of the new E-Class coupe (replacing CLK) the other day and I'd have to say that it vaulted ahead of the A-5 for me, especially if they release a 63 Black Series of the car.

WOW! That's a great looking car! Too bad I'm bound to 4-dr's, but if that were available when I bought my C-class I would have definately looked at that!

I was over miles on my c280 lease...so I stayed with Mercedes so I could get out of my lease 5 months early and not have to pay for the excess miles.
If it wasn't for that I would've gotten the G37 or the Audi A5

C350 and a Lightning.
I believe the OP needed awd of some sort? Have you driven the 5 series xi? I thought I was going to buy the 530xi untill I drove it. The steering felt very heavy (yes I've owned BMW's) and the difference in performance between a 530i and the 530xi was really felt in the "seat of the pants". I'm assuming due to 4 wheel drive trane loss. Otherwise, if you could get past that, they are very functional. I owned a 328it wagon for years and loved it.
I personally would trade my C350 for an Audi wagon in a heart beat but it's my wifes car and that's what she wanted.
That being said. I still like the little car very much.
