Tail Light Removal

How do I take the tail lights off? I want to send them to Jon's Tinted tails. The online owners manual only shows you how to replace the bulbs. Also, anyone have any pictures on how the brake lights look? I don't know how dark to tint them, and how dangerous it is to get them tinted too dark (how hard is it to see the brake light if you are in the car behind). I was thinking light medium or medium.

On another note, if I get 35% tint all around on my car, do you think it will effect my visibility at night? Any help is appreciated, thanks.

I did a 20% on rears and 35% on driver/passenger - I'm very comfortable driving at night. If you're not, consider the backup camera mod.

why don't people just go to their local body shop. Virtually every body shop offers this service. It's just painted. You'll get a faster turnaround time and no shipping hassles.

yes, pretty much all body shops can do this. Just call around or ask your local motorsport shop for reference.

I got mine tinted from Jon and I'm extremely satisfied. Jon also tinted the tail lights to my Passat and after 7 years they look like new with no peeling, fading or discoloration whatsoever (they were the first generation tinting and he has improved this technique since). They stand up to repeated polishing and waxing with a Porter Cable on high speed.

Jon did a Medium/Light tint to mine. I would have gone with a Light tint so that you see the variation between the red and white parts, but I'm still really happy the way it looks.
Jon started off being on the Passat World forum member and sharing his work (which he has perfected) to other members and it has taken off from there.

The tint I have is 30% all around (the legal limit), and I have no issues with visibility at night even with the rear sunshade up at night.
Removing the tail lights is very simple, you will need to unscrew 4 bolts from behind.

Thanks for the responses guys. AZN - I thought that you had to use a special paint for this? Also, I live in the Chicago land area and don't know many places that do this kind of work (other than a place i found that said it would be $400). I'll keep asking around,b ut if I have no luck, I think I'll go through the hassle shipping!

Any Seattle People know a place that can do this?
