No more '09s

Stopped at my dealer today and my sales guy (been there 25 years) told me that all W204 orders that are accepted by MB will be 2010 models. And that doesn't start for a few months so cars ordered now will have a slightly longer wait than previously.

I asked about the DI engines and he had no info.

alright, I must be missing something....

aren't all engines in modern cars direct injection?

but I think I'm thinking of the wrong definition (direct fuel injection)

No, they are not. Direct injection means the injector squirts fuel directly into the cylinder, just like a diesel. Our W204s (and almost everything else) have what is sometimes called port injection which means the injector is located in the intake runner just upstream of the intake valve. In DI engines, everything is different from the fuel pump putting out vastly higher pressure to the injectors which are "piezo" injectors. You can look up the definition.

Benefits of DI include more power and torque, higher fuel economy and lower emissions including C02 which is becoming a big issue.

All Porsches are now DI plus some VWs and at least one Isuzu SUV that I've seen.

MB is dragging it's feet on this.

and that 3.6L Cadillac engine is DFI too.

I imagine this means that they have so many 09s built and unsold, they have enough inventory to carry them through to the normal model year turnover date?

I wonder what is new in the 2010, they will shuffle some option in. One guess is a passenger power seat with door mounted seat controls.

MB seems slow to adopt this technology which is certainly to become standard in the years ahead. They must be sitting on too many fully assembled M272 engines... IIRC, they've only done DI in a couple cars, CLS and ???

Wait, what country are you in? They had that in Canada since the 08 models.

Almost all Audis across the line are FSI (DI) as well. FSI was introduced on their engines starting in '06. Only the A3's 3.2L is not FSI.

Ha... they must have a ****load stuck at the ports that can't be off-loaded to the dealerships. Gotta love the economy.

Didn't you see the video posted here back around the first of the year. It showed parking lots similar to that of a mall parking lot, full of MB's as far as the eye could see sitting at port. They have no where to move them, dealer stock is full. Same way with other manufacturers though, not just MB.

New E seems to have completely dropped the 3.0 V6 found in the C300 and replaced the 3.5 V6 in the 350 by a DI 3.5 (still talking about the W212 here). Looks like MB will be dropping the 300 designation in all models in favor of a Turbo charged 1.8L I4 with a bit less hp and a bit more torque, designation 250 in euroland.

I'm glad MB waits for new tech to become more reliable. Heck even Toyota isn't using DI yet. But when they do, you know its a mature technology and very reliable.

Bad news is, at least for gasoline DI engines, the pcv valve and EGR tend to foul up the back of the valves and cylinder head ports, very quickly. No fuel additives to clean these areas on DI gas engines.

That's quite funny. Is your 204 your first MB? MB has put into production all kinds of things that crapped out right away. As have ALL of the German car builders. Thank God for the warranty.

Sometimes called the "Customer financed field testing program."

OK, I made that up.

Yeppers, I did. I wonder how many *more* are there today.
