Question Tailpipe question. (this is bugging me)

Only noticed this recently when looking at some general pics of the c-class

my 200CDI has got 2 small tailpipes on 1 side of the car,
which bend down at the end. And no chrome finish.

However on all the pics i've seen, it's just 1 straight tailpipe,
with chrome....

i have to say, that I only found pics of 220's (not 200),
but that shouldn't make a difference...?

Hi,

The 200CDi is not available in Australia. All Australian 220CDi have a single chrome exhaust showing at the back, although I have not checked whether in fact two exhausts come together at that point. I'll check.

Regards Matthew

Or at least get some chrome tips.

Maybe one MB tip is supposed to go over both tailpipes?

Hi Egon,

The C180K and the C200CDI have the pipes like yours, but your dealer has to got a solution to it with an parts kit, if i am wright you have to ask Part number.

A2044905427

I'm not 100% sure if this is the wright one but you can ask it by the dealer...
It's a chrome tailpipe which goes over the 2 pipes you have now. There's a C180K here in the street who has it on. Looks better.

And otherwise, change your exhaust.

(als je wat hebt gezien wb een andere uitlaat vraag dan even wat de prijzen in frankrijk zijn en laat het mij even weten, dan kan ik kijken wat het hier kost en eventueel opsturen)

The CDI's I've seen in Germany usually have the double non-chromed tailpipe. The only explanation I could think of for this is the fact that the soot from diesels would quickly make chrome exhaust pipes turn black. Also, with the smaller diameter openings on the exhaust tips as you have there will be more velocity in the exiting exhaust, and therefore keep the soot from coming back up on your car and turning it black. I know there's advances in low-sulpher diesel engines and all, but the soot will always be there. Not sure if it makes sense, but I'm willing to bet that this is the case for ya. Good luck if you do change out to chrome!

Actually, the type of tailpipe you get depends on engine size (at least here in Germany). If you buy the very basic C Class (either the diesel 200 CDI or the gasoline 180 Kompressor) you only get the simple non-chrome tailpipe. With the 220 CDI or the C 200 Kompressor you get the single tip chrome tailpipe. With the larger engines you get one chrome tip on either side and that does include the diesel engines, as our C 320 CDI has the same dual chrome tailpipe that all US-spec C classes have.

I didn't notice that... So much for me racking my brain for an answer! Thanks!

100% correct, although the exception to the rule is that if you get the AMG pack then you get the single chrome tip even if it's 'only' a C200 CDI (I assume same holds true for the C180K).

I saw a C200 CDI with a single chrome tip shoved over the twin pipes once, not sure I liked it 100%. It didn't seem completely level and you can still see the twin pipes inside it. I would much prefer a solution with twin chrome exhaust tips, like you can buy for the Audi A4 2.0 TDI. Will have to see if I can find some decent looking aftermarket ones when I get my C200 CDI in a couple of weeks.

This statement sounds very logical. My 220CDI with the single larger tailpipe deposits carbon on to my rear bumper over time. There is an extension adjustment but it is best not to extend too far for fear of rear end parking damage to the tip.You may be better off keeping the twin exhausts .
