Oil Change DIY question - O rings

The filter I got from dealer comes with 5 O rings in 4 sizes. I heard I only need the largest one and two same size medium one, but dont need the two smallest ones. Is that correct? BTW, it is a C300.

Oh, and what filter do you usually use and where to buy? (other than dealer)

Thanks guys!

correct, 3 gaskets of the 5. Note the position of the ones you remove. Also note the marking on the filter that show you how far to slide it down the filter holder shaft.

Purolator actually makes a filter for this car which people here say is german sourced. But while under warranty, I'll buy filters at the dealer so I can show a receipt in case something happens.

this is for a W203, but a good reference nonetheless:

Thanks! From the pics, seems the two small o-rings at the top are slightly different in size?

I bought a mityvac 7400 from amazon, haven't used it yet. But I wish it was bigger so it could hold all the 8.5qt at one time.

Oh, do I need a wrench to remove the filter? Or can I loose it just by hand?

My local dealer sometimes has promotion of $90 oil change (or even cheaper, I once saw $60 on their website, not sure what oil they use though). Mobile 0w-40 sells for $6.27/qt+tax here in walmart, a filter costs $23+ from dealer. Add all these up, not that cheap compared with changing oil at dealer...

You should change all the O-rings on the filter holder each time you change the filter. There is no reason not to.

You can buy the fleece filters in the aftermarket and they will be the same part as the dealer but quite a bit cheaper. I bought six from buymbparts.com and they were considerably cheaper than from my dealer who charged me $25.83 for one filter when the A-service was done a few weeks ago.

But I only saw 3 o-rings on the filter holder from the pics? Where should I put the smallest two?

How many 0-rings?

I almost pulled my filter out to check but didn't want to pull the engine cover.

The small ones go at the very bottom and I'm thinking there were two. It's possible that an extra was provided so you would have one to lose but I don't think so.

When you pull the filter holder out, all will be revealed.

You need a wrench, advance auto sells them, I believe its a 76mm cap style. The application note on the box will say that its for Mercedes and Porsche.

C300 4th and 5th O-rings

Last time I extracted the oil from my C300 I only changes 3 of the 5 o-rings as I could not get to the other 2. They were recessed withing the oil filter stem/holder/assembly. How do you get them out? Need a special tool? If someone knows.. do tell. Thanks.

There should be only 3 o-rings total. 2 small for the stem and 1 large one. The answer was posted in the thread if you even read it.

The small o-rings can be easily removed with a small flat blade screwdriver.

Ok... When I went out to buy another filter I actually got to talk to a Mercedes Technician who was buying supplies at the local auto parts store... for his own vehicles.

Here is the skinny. You only need 3 o-rings. The filter for my C300 fits another vehicle so it comes with 2 extra o-rings. Changing them and the filer is a snap. You need an oil cap wrench... it comes out and you remove the filter, the 3 o-rings then put the new filter on and install the 3 new 0-rings... Then screw it back in... Viola!

Changing the oil could not be cheaper or easier. The Mobile One oil can be bought on sale... once in a blue moon... so stock up.

I went to Home Depot and bought one of their orange buckets and lids ($6). Also bought a Flotec FPDMP21SA-P2 Self Priming Drill Pump ($6) and 20ft length of 3/8th clear tubing ($5) and a 10ft length of 1/2 clear tubing ($3.50)... a clamp and supportive hose "garden hose" fitting.

Came home and dropped the 3/8th inch hose down the dipstick til it hit bottom and then left enough to run over the fender and down about a foot. Then attached the 1/2 inch clear hose (about another 2 ft) then fastened the clamp. Screwed it onto the pump and placed the garden hose end in the pail (comes with the pump). Attached my drill and turned it on. Was done inside of 10 minutes.... 15 if you take into account assembling the hoses, clamp and pump.

Be sure to place a thin piece of wood from the dip stick to the fender. The oil will soften the hose... but it snaps right back and stores easily in the box the pump came in.

So I paid about $25 for the pump assembly (and have it for next time) and have oil stored. Now a need a filter sale!!! Cheers!!!
