The average person wouldn't know the difference (nor care) between any regular MB class and it's AMG counterpart. The average Joe simply sees the Star and nothing else IMO.
The prime example would be this:
Picture a street full of domestic cars owned by non-car enthusiasts, and along comes a C class owner. Whether he owns a C230 or a C63 AMG won't matter much to the street. The non-enthusiasts will simply see a beautiful luxury german car LOL!!!

I was thinking of putting a C230 badge on mine... People in the know would spot the pano and realize what it is... But then what's the point? As @MartinGLK points out, people who don't know will only see the three pointed star. So better just debadge everything.
I was on a road trip with my boss last year, weeks later he swore I drove an E class and lamented that he was paying me too much. :P
